Tascam 424Mk3 Challenged

Here's a real newbie question.

Can I use my Tascam 424 for extra channels with my Mackie 808S? or is it only good for recording and not live sound?

Yes, of course you can.

You may use the 424mkIII as a sub-mixer to your other mixer.

The 424's 6 main inputs may be submixed into a L/R-Stereo signal, then the LINE-OUTs of the 424 may be routed to another mixer. You may also use the inputs 7/8, if you wish, but there's no EQ on those input-channels.
