Hi

I would like to pick 424mk111 owners brains once again.

I am recording my band again next week .Here is my question ..I am miking the guitar combo,and bass combo with SM57`S to tracks 1 and 2 ...vocal to track 3 and drums to track 4. set to DIRECT, Our drummer has got a small behringer mixer, could he mic his kit up with say 5 or 6 mics, into his mixer set his levels , then connect his mixer into the SUB IN connections with RCA cables on the back of the Tascam? and record to track 4? [I only want drums in mono]... if so , how do you assign the SUB INPUT l/r connections to track 4? the manual is rubbish

Thanks

Hey just a heads up....
If want alot of good answers about tape machines,try asking in the "Analog Only" forum.

2 Answers:

1) You can't "assign" the Sub-In inputs to a track. Sub-In Left goes to Buss-Left and Sub-In Right goes to Buss-Right. Period.

2) Yes, your friend can submix his drum kit with many mics and an external mixer, pan all mics to Mono on the submixer, and use a mono output feed signal line connected to 424mkIII's Input #4, and record DIRECT.

Sub-in becomes superfluous at this point. (not needed/not used).

(Additional info): if you want to use the Sub-In, (not sure why at this point, but...) plug the mono line out feed from the external mixer into Sub-In(R), set Track 4 to BUSS-R, and Pan all other 424mkIII inputs hard left.

However, it seems like extra non-needed steps and connections to use the SUB-Ins, at all, in this scenario.

RESTATED FOR CLARITY: forget using the SUB-INs at all, get a mono output feed from the external submixer, and plug it to Input #4 on the 424mkIII, recording all tracks in DIRECT.

Not saying it "can't" be done. I just seems worthless in this scenario to mix Direct & Buss mode recording and/or use the Sub-Ins at all, if you don't need to.

Why complicate things more than they need to be? [edited for clarity]

:spank::eek:;)
