I just joined this site, and a very nice site it is:), after having won an auction for a 424 mkll on ebay yesterday. I am new to analog recording and am a bit clueless. I then purchased an MXL 990/991 mic kit. After reading around the web, I kept coming across info about the 424 not being able to use phantom powered mics (please excuse my ignorance). Did I make a mistake buying those mics or is there a device that will allow me to use them with the 424 mkll. If not please recommend mics that are compatible. Thanks in advance for your help.

pehjott, thanks for the fast reply. I've been reading about ART Tube MP Project Series Tube-Microphone Preamp. I was wondering would a preamp do the same thing? BTW, I plan on using the mics for vocals and acoustic guitar.

Go to musicians friends website and type in phantom power supply and you will find what you need there.
You will need two mic cords for each mic to use one of those units.

I wouldnt get a Art mic preamp or anything like that for your 424. Its just complicating things and the quality would suffer with your unit.

Keep it simple with the gear you have for now till you get good with what you have. Maybe look into a inxpensive reverb unit also.

Get a phantom power supply & use the internal preamps,...

would be my best advice!;)

Thanks a lot guys for all your advice! I've decided to go with the Nady SMPS-1X Phantom Power Supply from musicians friend. For now I will only be using one mic at a time. Too bad i'll have to wait a little bit for it.

Any general tips/tricks for recording on this?
How can i make the stereo imaging wider? I feel the mixes are generally quite narrow... I am a noob to the 424, just bought it for getting ideas down quickly/making lo-fi ep's etc etc

thanks
