Hi all,

Appreciate any help.

Went to use the Tascam 424 mkIII the other day, having not been touched since last functioning properly, and found the following problem: There is no playback sound being played from a known working/recorded on cassette. No activity on the VU meters.

Similarly, though I can hear in headphones the sound of a mic or instrument when plugged into an armed channel (monitoring) there is no signal activity in the VU meter, though properly armed and routed for recording.

Does anyone have an idea of where the problem may lie? I can expand on the signal path or any other specifics that might help problem solve this.

The cassette mechanism works fine. I can hear inputs through the mixer. But, there is no signal being read off a cassette with tracks on it, nor does the VU meter acknowledge the sounding/working input.

Thanks for any help/insight/leads.

Unfortunately, I don't know what that problem could be, but I didn't want you to think that it's normal for no one to respond to questions around here. There are some very knowledgeable and generous people here, and I imagine that someone will be able to help out. Good luck!

Are all of the tracks recorded to on the tape? What position is(are) the input selectror(s) ["mic/line, off, tape"] set to relative to tracks known to be recorded on the tape?

Set your inputs for each of the tracks to "tape" and set your record functions TRKs 1-4 for to "safe" and try playing the tape.

Thanks for the replies, all.

Yeah, I have attempted to play the tape the proper way, set to tape, tracks safe, alas, they don't play the recorded tracks and show no action on the VU meters (similarly have used a commercial tape for testing and nothing and played the first tape in a regular cassette deck where I can hear the recorded tracks). When I crank the level there is a whitenoise so the headphones are working.

Similarly, when tracks are armed for recording (mic/line) I can hear the mic/line input through the headphones, eq adjustments have an effect, but there is no VU action when set to direct or buss r/l.

Must be a blown connection somewhere as the inputs/channels do seem to work but somewhere along the line something is busted. Not knowing much about the electronics am trying to narrow it down though may just have to take it to someone with more knowledge I guess.

thanks again all. appreciate the help.

Yes I was thinking that it must be a bad connection/component somewhere as well. The only way I know how to check for that stuff is with a continuity meter, but it's a tedious task if you're in the dark!
