Tascam 424 mkIII = "preamp"?

Hola Amigos,

Okay, obviously I have next to zero knowledge on preamps... I've been trying to find stuff in old threads, but no real luck.

I was wondering if the mixer section of my Tascam 424 mkIII is considered a "preamp".

I am starting to use my computer for recording... just experimenting and what not - and from what I have read, I need a damn preamp.

Any links for good info on preamps (what exactly they are, how they work etc...) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys,
Alaking.

A preamp basially amplifies whatever sound you're putting in. The 424 has preamps. What it does not have is phantom power.

As vurt stated, its an amplifier. Mic's dont have enough gain to output a descent signal level alone, they need a liitle help. Your mixer should have a trim toggle to amplify your mic to the output of the mixer in addition to a level toggle normally at the bottom of the insert. Phantom power would be used for mics that require voltage to operate.
