Hello,

Apologies first, I have already asked this question in the 'Recording' section, but thought maybe the 'Analog' section might be better suited.

Apologies second, I know there is alot easier ways of achieving this, but I'm just trying to work with what gear I have.

Equipment for recording:
Tascam 424 MKII
Tascam Porta 05
Fostex D90 (8 track)

Up to now I have recorded drums on all four tracks of the 424 MKII, then recorded to Fostex D90 and finally recorded them into Cubase to have the drums on seperate tracks (I only have a 2 Input M-Audio Duo Soundcard but since the files are in digital form from the Fostex D90 I can record tracks 1 & 2 onto Cubase, then Tracks 3 & 4 and then line them up in Cubase).
Then I record guitars, Bass, Vocals, etc seperately on Cubase.

Right, this is my question:
I want to use the 424 MKII and Porta 05 to record 4 drum mics (via the 424) and say two guitars (via the Porta 05), both connected to the Fostex D90, in order to record 6 tracks simutaneously (on the Fostex), in a live session, so really only using the Tascams as mixers and not actually recording on to them.

Therefore, is there a way of getting 4 outputs of the 424 MKII (i.e. use the Tascam 424 MKII as a mixer, and a workaround in obtaining 4 outputs simultaneously without recording on to it), while inputing at the same time?

All the best.

ooooo...I should know that. Haven't got my 424 OR my manual handy.

Have you tried setting tracks 1~4 to DIRECT and connecting the TAPE OUT jacks to the D90 and seeing if you can monitor inputs that way? I can't recall if those TAPE OUT jacks are always post recorder section (i.e. if they are truly fixed tape out jacks and only output tape tracks...try that, and I'll have a look in my manual as soon as I can.

Hi Sweetbeats,

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately this set up did not work. There is no direct path via the Mic/Line inputs, via Direct to Tape Outs.

I thinking maybe there is seperate path(s) for Tracks 1-4, via Line outs, and FX outs, etc?

All the best.

I'm sorry to say, but it looks as though you cannot get all 4 main channels of the 424 mkII mixer output simultaneously. :(

This is because the EFFect sends are both fixed post fader so while you could independently control the levels of a couple channels to the EFF1 and EFF2 output jacks, you have to raise the faders on those channels to feed the EFF1 & 2 knobs and therefore those sources are also going to the L-R buss along with the other 2 main mixer channels...you'll have independent mixes on the EFF1 & 2 jacks but the L-R buss will still have all 4 channels in it.

EFF2 is switcheable to pre-fade but your only source option in pre-fade is the tape section...the TAPE CUE function.

Certainly not the 424's or Tascam's fault for not making this possible as the 424 was designed as a self-contained unit first, but certainly a bummer for you at present.

Hi Sweetbeats,

Thank you for your replies and information.
It was a long shot in the dark, for sure.
Again cheers - much appreciated.

All the best.
