Tascam 388

I have one as well, but it is too big for shipping. I have it in a great rolling rack that holds the 388 and has a shelf above it for montiors. I can send a picture if you are interested.

Where are you located?

Sorry for slow reply...I don't get on the forum too often. Yeah, I think that trying to get this crated and ready for safe shipping would probably be well over $100 and probably more effort than I am willing to put into it. Sorry. Sounds like maybe the guy from LA is up for selling.

Have you looked on ebay? If you are leary about buying something from there they have a buyer protection program to protect you against false advertising and swindlers and stuff like that

It's not so much the Ebay ripoff artists you should be worried about,...

although there are a few Ebay -bad apples in the bunch, and/or sellers who'd be less than 100% accurate in their descriptions, (however, an accurate picture tells it's own story).

No, the biggest worry you have about sourcing a 38 or 388 off Ebay is the SHIPPING. I, and many others like me, have had their otherwise good recorders, mixers and Portastudios damaged the from drop-treatment UPS gives packages.

Fedex, UPS and USPS have similar "supply chain" operations, but UPS has the worst reputation, by far.

Ebay's easy, and most Ebay sellers are totally on the up & up, but it's shipping that's the most hazardous thing. This equipment is large & heavy, and most laxidasical sellers will not pack items well enough. Face it, some sellers of such equipment have NO CLUE how to properly package such an item.

A word to the wise,... is not necessary.

All the rest of us,... watch out!

PS: it's always advantageous to find an Ebay deal in your local area, and arrange for in-person pickup. That's the surest way to avoid UPS handling damage. This method has worked best for me. YMMV.

And dont think that the insurance they sell at the ups store is worth a crap for anything.
I have been looking at Reel to Reels alot in the last year on ebay and it looks like it has come to a time when alot of people are selling decks but they claim they dont know a thing about them, and they cant test them, or they just act stupid about the whole thing and they sell them as is and you are on your own.
I have come to the point that if I buy a machine off of ebay I just assume its going to have something wrong with it and there is a good chance that my money is going to be waisted. Sometimes I get a good unit and sometimes I dont. I am only able to have a I dont care aditude about it cause I can afford to. But I feel sorry for the guy that cant and is in the market for a 8 track and sends his money to some of thease people that are just crooks.

Still,...

I've gotten many good used items off Ebay, (appx. 140+ Ebay transactions), and I was only stiffed twice.

One, about a year an a half ago, was an Ebayer named Troy Madarus, aka T-n-S-Audio, from Indiana, or somewhere in the midwest. It was a nice Technics RS-955, topline cassette deck w/dbx, that I had bid up to $89, because I reeeeeally wanted it, veeeeeeeeeery badly. He stiffed me outright, then I found out he stiffed EVERYONE that month, and then disappeared.

The second one, about a year ago, was an Ebayer named Jason Kelley from Scotsdale, AZ. He sold me a "fine working condition" Tascam M-520, that took about 2 months to ship and arrive, then arrived missing 21 2-p jumper plugs, all the wood side panels and the power-umbilical cable,... missing. The most important item, the power-umbilical cable, leaves the huge M-520 as useless junk, if missing. Fortunately for me, I successfully charged back this item through Visa and Paypal, and recouped my $790,... whew!!

However, as I began saying, on balance I've had mostly good Ebay transactions on a variety of things that turned out fine. Also worth mentioning again, is that I've arranged to pick up in person some of the heaviest and most important items. Beyond those things, I've suffered a few distinct cases of UPS damage from shipping.

UPS is what it is, but it's always the seller's fault, for inadequate packing of items. I mean, you should just assume outright that UPS will drop your box, and pack accordingly. Like,... duh. But still, some people are clueless.

My worst case must have been when some idiot packed a fine condition Tascam 38, in a box barely bigger than the unit itself, and then packed the void spaces with old t-shirts. Well,... the Tascam 38 was smashed on all sides, broken panels, bent frames & everything, and the rags looked like the worst of Goodwill throwaways. I didn't even get a decent t-shirt out of it,... but I was eventually able to repair the 38 to working condition, just worse for wear & tear.

Not to become too redundant, but watch out for the shipping practices of UPS and similar shippers, and ride the seller hard about proper packaging of items. Also, for the easily damaged, most important and/or most expensive items, ALWAYS use your Visa or other credit card, which gives you protection and charge-back rights. Any bank-draft transaction that goes sour, and you're stuck with it, literally.

That's the end of my memo, I guess.

Good luck, & all that.
;)

I have been wary about eBay ever since I bought a Korg toneworks discontinued item and it never worked right, I guess I just hit one of those bad apples

Tascam 388

If there is any interest, I do have a Tascam 388 recorder. Its a great machine. I just bought a Tascam 2488 and am thinking about selling the 388 - email me for more details.

The BIGGEST problem about eBay, in my opinion, is shipping and more precisely, eBay sellers who are mental invalids about packing heavier items. Unless you pick these items up in person or have a competent seller who is willing (a BIG "if") to work at packing the item PROPERLY, don't waste your time.
