Hi, I'm new to this site and have just got access to a Tascam 388. I've not done any recording for about 30 years and even then I left most of it to a friend. I've got the Tascam all working according to the manual and managed to make a test recording. I followed the instructions and all went well. Again following instructions I tried to play back what I'd recorded. The meter was moving so I presumed I'd recorded something. I could not get any sound though. I used headphones and also put it through an amplifier. Still nothing. There was sound from both amplifier or headphones during the recording so I'm stumped. Thanks for looking

Chances are that you've just missed something simple like a monitoring level pot or something.
Difficult to be any more helpful without being there to run through the signal path with you.

I doubt anyone will have the perfect answer to this kind of question in a forum - but you never know I guess!

Good luck with it!

BTW - 'just got access' does that mean it's installed somewhere else like a studio where it's used regularly, or have you just bought it and it could have a fault?

Hi, It's in a "studio" which is used by a hospital for podcasts and small groups for therapy. I'm supporting a guy who goes there and all the equipment has been donated. We've got some songs together and want to record them. The Tascam has been sat in the corner since it was donated and we only got it out yesterday. I'm sure I'm missing something and it's probably just a switch or button I've missed. Sorry for my ignorance, as I say, it's been a while.... Where are the monitoring pots? I've got sound coming through the headphones when recording and I can also route it through and amp and it's fine. It's just the playback. Thanks for your help

Have you changed the channel strips to "RMX" (Remix) with the 3 way toggle (Mic/Line/Rmx) at the top of each channel strip? This will route the audio back through the channel so you can route it to the LR bus.

I tried changing those toggle switches while it was playing back but I'm not sure what the LR (left/right?) bus is.

Your best hope is to grab somebody else who uses it.
I think you probably have missed a toggle or button somewhere - don't worry it happens to everyone and drives us all equally insane!

Hi all, tried the Tascam today and yes it does need the toggle switch changed to RMX and everything works fine. Unfortunately I want one of my own now. Thanks for all your help and I'm sure you'll see me on here soon with more questions
