Hey Herm, of course i know you didnt write the tune, but i still think its pretty damn close to the original feel and you didnt try to rock it up like every other person does when they cover older tunes. Youre the coolest looking one in your old band there! You were the "Davy Jones"! I have a 38 and an m30 as well. I try to do it 60s style as close as possible. No rocking it up, no adding distortion, no adding of extra strums like every song that comes out these days. I try to write it straight and hooky with no attitude.

I RESPECT HERM

Too bad youre far away. Id be in a band with a 52 year old dude. People my age think music is a haircut! and they think turning on distortion is the hook of the song! And they only sing on the root note! And every song is about how bad their life sucks! Youth of this era is the least talented of all the eras. I blame mtv

About that last paragraph......I'm 17, and I must say, you are right! MTV is the suckiest piece of crap EVER. All it is now is now is scripted "reality" that only degrades women and creates stereotypes of musicians in many ways, guys by making them look like immature sex machines, women by making them look like dumb blondes, and ALL homosexuals on mtv are stereotypes andincreadibly and flamboyantly gay. If mtv does anything for the world, it makes it a crappier place to live in!

Phew. Sorry, that's een bothering me for a long time. But yeah, anyways, the music industry is declining rapidly. Music is now money and commercial, and just plain bad, like the Used, and My Chemical Romance and all that other "emo/screamo/hardcore" crap.

yea yeah

Heres the deal, (i know its off topic but i dont care). Back in the old days when rock and roll was new, it was ugly to most people. Offensive to the old way and disturbing to the order of society (seemingly). But now music has progressed to the point where there is no where left to go in terms of shock value. There is no way to be heavier or more evil. I saw a metal band who put on their album cover a morgue photo of a 9 year old girl whos face had been literally shredded by a pitbull. They were basically celebrating the fact that in life horrible things happen to innocent people. This type of rebellion holds NOTHING for me. This type of view on life DOES NOT speak for me.

So what can be done now? What is the new punk rock? The new rock and roll? Simplicity, creativity, talent, songwriting and melodic skill. Admitting faults not covering them up with attitude. Painting a portrait of beauty not horror and fear for the listener. Everybody shits yet everybody on tv acts like their shit does not stink.

Life sucks what can i say. But sitting around writing tunes about how it sucks is caveman monkey music. Its a dead art and a bad leftover byproduct of the early nineties. Providing escape and hope and distraction takes a brain. And almost no one is proud to have a brain these days.

You know i saw M. Manson on tv the other day and he was trying to act all wierd and gay by wearing makeup and showing guys kissing. That stuff is not shocking to me. He could just SING a melody and it would shock me. Men dont sing anymore. Its "gay" to sing a real melody but its cool to show guys kissing. Every melody in popular music sung by men now is short (like 2-3 notes) and is usually on the root note (providing no feeling and intensifying monotony) or the fifth (making the song sound like a droning power chord). You can thank Alice in Chains for popularizing that lame ass trick.

Man the guy who just wants to hear about 38 recordings must be pissed reading this!!

I hear ya ...

Antispatula you are being bothered by, and growing into fruition as a musician during what could be the end of the Nirvana years.

These depressed-youth songs don't have the same newness as they did in 1995. So that probably won't last much longer.

But who knows.

Specifically ROCK MUSIC has been blurred, and is ready for a refocus.

But it will take more than just one great rock show to do it.

It takes a whole new set of bands that define a sound for youngsters.

Like Van Halen, they were selling out arenas before they were signed because they were all about partying and having a good time at the same time cranking out some great rock music.

Man, that version of Windy rocks :D

Is that a real flute in the break?

Great line!

speaking of melodies and crap,
David's new thing coming soon :) He said it's his best. hmmmm, who knows. Gotta check it out.

I didnt play on this song, I only recorded it. The flute is a keyboard.
I am 52 but all the guys that played on this are older than me.

Herm-

Love the song windy. Could you share some insight on how you recorded the drums?

Ok Well the drums where kinda of a cheat there. The drummer used a real snare and real cymbals but used the rolland electronic toms and kick.
It was there 5000.00 set.
It was done on 3 tracks one overhead oktava 012 one sm57 on the snare.
And one track for the toms and kick together. There was a shit load of lowend in the whole electronics part of it and no highend to work with. He would not change anything for me at all so I had to use what I was sent.
also everything got sent through a mixmizard mixer and then to my m312b tascam mixer. Also everything went through two Alesis 3630 compressors.
Snare reverb was a Fostex 3180 spring reverb.
It all could have sounded a bunch better if I had just did things a little differant.

You gotta lay down the law Herm, I think it's safe to say you've laid down more great sounding drum tracks of your own than he ever will. I had a different guy tell me his stereo out from the Roland drum module had already been "dialed in" for "studio" work, so mixing him would not be a problem. No individual tracks at all, everything pre-mixed in the box......of course it was un-usable. Thank God for midi and Drumagog.

Well you know whom we are talking about dont you mike?
Try and keep this shit to yourself if you would. I dont need the boys pissed off
So how is it going are you doing some recording of the same boys?
