Tascam 38 8 track reel to reel.

Does anyone know where I can get a manual for a Tascam 38 8 track? We can't seem to get the thing to record. We can get it to play back what's on the tape fine but we are trying to record over it and can't seem to get it.

I have a 38, perhaps I can help. Are you trying to do a punch-in on a track, or just erase the tape?
 
This is the tape that he got with the unit. There is someone on it going "test, test one two". heh heh it's pretty funny actually but were trying to just tape over it. We have never used it before so we don't know what the heck were doing. Do we need to erase the tape first or anything like that? I'll also check out that link! Thanks!

Here's another question for you seeing you have one of these. Now our thoughts were to record to this then transfer to tape and eventually get it converted to digital and from there use some sort of mixing software on the computer. From your experiance how well will this work or how much can we do with it once it's converted to digital. I have someone that can do that for me.

Make sure the function button is pressed in for the channel you are recording on. Then hold the record button down and press play. Also make sure the tape is threaded properly.

If the board was shipped with someone like the Devil company UPS and was beat to death in shippment cause they dont care about your package, Just the money you spent with them it could be that one of the boards in side has come loose from the mother board and needs to be reseated.
All of my 388,s needed this done before they would work when I got them.
You can take the top cover off and check them. press down on them lightly to seat them back into their sockets. Also you can check the fuses from there.
 
Tascam 38

I have a 38, and I am having problems recording too. I CAN record, but the playback is really rough sounding, and the output volume is rather weak.
I tried opening it up to check the soundboards, but wasn't sure how to identify the soundboards. Anyone??
