I was wondering if any 2488 users might have had success recording a good punchy powerful drum sound on the 2488? So far I have been using this thing for about 3 years and have never captured a drum sound that I really like except for on some soft songs. If I have a fast energetic song or a hard out beat the drums sound weak and stupid, especially when using a sm57 on the snare, it sounds like turd. I have a great room to record in full of natural reverb. 2 oktava 012 small diaphram condensers for overheads in xy pattern,a sm57 for snare, shure tom-tom mic's, audio technica atm25 for the kick drum. For a room mic I use an Oktava 319 large diaphram condenser or at2020 audio technica. After Mix down I find that the drum sound sucks, so it could be my mixing techniques, compression not being used at all, or if I do use it perhaps it's not in the right way (The compressors on this machine sounds kind of fake or cheesy to me), or just bad mic's, or other things I hav'nt thought of yet. I never had problems with recording drums on analog 4 or 8 track cassette recordings made by tascam, they sounded a little rough but at least they recorded with some real power. The reason I got the 2488 was because I liked tascams earlier analog stand alone units and the 2488 had 24 tracks which I really like to have. I am also starting to think that maybe this is just not the right machine for the drum sound I am going for.
