Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Tascam 244 machine and now I'm trying to figure out how to get the audio out from the Tascam and into my PC. I have an M-Audio M-Track plus hooked up to my PC. From what I can figure out I will want to take the AUX OUT on the Tascam and convert that into something to go into the M-Track. Any help would be appreciated as I'm pretty new to all this. Thanks!

Shame you bought the M track since it only has two inputs. With an AI with 4 line inputs (NI KA6 OF course!) you could (I think) have "dumped" 4 track recordings into the computer for further work. As it is I am sure you can only record a stereo mix into the M-track.

You COULD try recording tracks 1&2 then 3&4 on another set of tracks and attempt to line them up.

On a purely technical point, you can dump track at 16bits (44.1kHz) and save a bit of HDD space since 24 bits is a total overkill for tape!

You need a couple of Phono/RCA to Quarter inch TS cables. These are pretty common at any shop selling audio/music products.

Depending what you want to do, you can use a variety of different connectors. The "Tape Out" on the back will let you do individual tracks (but only two at a time). The main outputs will let you send a mix (which can be split into two channels on your computer with the use of the left/right pan controls on each channel. Or, as you say, you can use the Aux out by turn up the Aux sends on the channels and connecting to those ones.

Whichever way you go, Phono/RCA to quarter inch are the cables you need. (FYI, I'm saying "RCA/Phono" because they're called RCA in the USA and Phono in Britain (and a variety in different countries.)

Thanks for the advice everyone! I tried plugging into the m-audio with the adapter and for some reason the levels were really low and everything was mono. I plugged directly into my soundcard and was able to get a much louder signal with stereo. does this degrade the quality of the signal? I dont have a very nice soundcard as it is just built into the motherboard. Also I am really interested in the possibility of tracking out all 4 channels separately into the computer. I'd be willing to invest in a different audio interface in the future (when i have the money), would the NI KA6 be the one to go with?

Thanks so much!

The M-Track should have worked fine, some weirdness going on there! Check that the device is set as default recording device in Windows Audio Setup and that the levels are wound up (but not necc' to max!)

Yes, the KA6 would be an excellent choice but you could be lucky as I was and picked up an 8i6 for a ton, another good "legacy" unit would be the Tascam US1800. Connectivity overkill for you but if the price is right, an excellent interface.
