I'm thinking of buying a used tascam 22-2. does anyone know the advantages or disadvantages of this machine?

we don't need rest!!
advantage/disadvantages....take it either way. Probably the cheapest 1/2 track machine ever made, and only a fair S/N ratio.
disadvantages..
7 1/2 inch reels only...no pitch control, auto functions, etc...a basic no frills machine.
for the price....none other, really...
advantages...
you can find them cheap nowadays...but back in the tape glory days, a VERY inexpensive way to get 1/2 track tapes (for radio stations, dupe facilities...etc). very small machine, so can be moved fairly easy if needed. Three heads!!! Mic inputs on the front panel...great for recording those stereo recitals with a pair of cheapie high impedence mics...
I hesitantly might suggest, pick up a stereo DBX noise reduction unit if the tape hiss drives you nuts...and you're dumping off the recorder into something else...like your computer. But be prepared for low end thumping/pumping...if things get going a little rocky!!
