Tascam 208i series sound issue

I bought a tascam 208i on auction. I got it delivered yesterday. My computer is recognizing it. The USB light is lit; there is no sound.Mic is not picking (no light signal) and earphone not working either. I have updated all the drivers as indicated in the manual. Is this a common issue or I just got a defective equipment?

This is a device better answered by Jim Finch at the Tascam Forum as I have had little experience with this. The USB interfaces do require a mixer software and to be configured in a computer as they just do not work when plugged in. In my Radio experience where I set up these devices many users did not know how to interface them and so the Engineer of the station was involved to get them to work. You have to link and configure the device with your mixer software in the computer you have.

Simplest question first... have you chosen the interface as your sound device in Windows and in your recording software? You'll need to set it for both your output device and mic input device. Just loading the interface doesn't make Windows choose it.

Are you using a DAW or some other recording software like Audacity?

Thanks a lot for the answer. I did download the mixer software from Tascam and to my recollection the interface was selected in the settings. But I haven't explored the software yet. I will try that as soon as I get home and see if it works. Thanks

Thanks for your reply. I will double check the setting in the software that I download with the Tascam driver and see if it solves the issue. Thanks

Thanks for the above tips. However, I have tried them all, but input signal light on my Tascam 208i does not light up. All the configuration is ok in the windows sound settings. But there is no input or output noticeable in the tascam 208i setting panel (software) and, consequently, even the daws that i have on my pc cannot pick up the input signal. Even the computer sound (playback) does not come back through the interface. I am wondering if the interface is deficient.

Assuming it's in working order...

Is the Monitor BALANCE turned to full computer? If using a condenser mic, have you set it at MIC/LINE and Phantom Power on?

Do you get headphone audio playing an mp3 file from your system folder.. or YouTube videos?

I was looking at the Settings Panel and Mixer set-up directions and there might well be some routing in there to correct this.

Thanks Spantini for quick reply. "Monitor Balance turned to full computer," I have not tried that setting. And, actually, I have to kind of do a search on Youtube on how to do that because, honestly, I do not know how. Same with the "routing." If you have suggestion on a youtube video that I can watch, I will really appreciate.

You might look at these two videos. They show a bit about setting the routing and the mixer functions. The mixer software looks similar to my 16x08 software. It's been quite a while since I installed it, so I really don't remember what the stock settings were. Also, as Spantini said, if you are using a condenser mic, flip the mic switch to the +48 setting.
