How can I get more sound out of my recordings while using my Tascam 1800 unit with Pro Tools 10. If you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. I am having decent soundwaves while recording but when I go to playback what I recorded on my drum set it seems to be far to low. I have all the connections properly set up. So if you can think of anything that would be cool.

That is a strange question. You should have no issues with the preamps. Been there and done that.

What exactly is your issue? Are you using Cubase LE that came with the interface? Just turn that shiz up after recording man. Everything on my website was recorded with a US 1800 or the US 1641.

You may just need to learn how to use your software.

I am here to help.

If the graphic display of the sound waves shows healthy levels (and, more important, if the meters are in the right range) it's just a simple matter of turning up the faders for the channels you find too low. Or, if this gets the overall mix into clipping, turn down everything else then just turn up your monitor speakers.

On playback make sure first that you un-armed your tracks and mess around with the mix knob on your interface.

You should be recording in the -18 dB to -12 dB range, mixing in the same general range to provide plenty of headroom for mastering.

Could adding some overhead mics give me a louder sound while recording?

Overheads might give you a more pleasing drum sound but if you're adding extra mics just to give a "louder sound" while monitoring then, with the utmost respect, you need to read up on the instructions for your DAW and audio interface.

Think of it like your TV. If you want that louder, you turn up the volume. You don't call the TV company and ask them to use more microphones. It's the same with monitoring. You should be able to set both the mix and the level exactly how you want it for the feed to your headphones.

I'm going to assume that you aren't so stupid that you can't find your volume knob, but that you are really asking why your drums sound like tinny pieces of crap when you record them.

How about explaining how you are micing your drums. What kind of microphones are you using and how are they placed?

You probably need to add a lot of compression, some reverb, and a bunch of other things to get that massive drum sound that you are probably looking for. You may want to look through the techniques forum and look on the Pro Tools forum for how to mix drums properly.

Well I have tried turning up the volume and that is how I get a medium quality sound. But that is when my interface volume is turned up all the way for the headphones. And if I turn up the faders for the interface the recording will clip, both on the interface and in my DAW. The only example I can think of is like back to your TV example is like I have the my volume maxed out at 100% but the volume is only being played at like 40%. Its just weird that when I watch drum covers on YouTube there drums are so loud and I can hear them clearly but when I record and go and listen to the playback of my drums mine sound like my volume is only turned quarter of the way up. Sorry if none of this is making sence. It just seems my output volume is way lower than it should be. If it would help I can record something and show you and send you pics of my fader levels in my DAW and on my interface.
