Hi, I got your addy off your website and was wondering if you could help me. I have a recording software program that used to allow wonderful audio recording where my mixer hooked into my soundcard from TAPE OUT to LINE IN. I bought a "better soundcard" and now am having problems. Here is a copy of the post I have been sending around for help:

Hi all, newbie here. Whenever I record audio through my mixer, my only
output option is TAPE IN/OUT with RCA plugs. (I have a Eurorack MX802A by
Behringer). However, when I plug in the RCA cords from the mixer out to the
soundcard, my main level immediately go skyrocketing even before anything is
recorded or transmitted. As soon as I plug in the cord, the level changes
and the result of audio recording contains static and popping! I have
played with the levels/sound EQ, recording level, etc. with no help! My
soundcard is a brand new mp3+ soundblaster from creative labs. It is
frustrating to not be able to recording audio with "ProAudio"! MIDI
capabilities work fine. Is there anything I am not doing right? Before I
bought this new soundcard this was never a problem.

Thanks,

Ken

My setup is : Soundcard OUT to mixer IN
Mixer OUT to LINE IN

Sorry for the confusion, but are you trying to record from the computer or to the computer?

If you have the "Tape Out" of the mixer going to the soundcards "Line Input" and the "Line Output" of the soundcard returning to any input of the mixer, you're setting up a loop and it will squeal everytime. Does that mixer have a direct output on the indiviual channels equiped with mic pre's or at least an insert?

no, the only outs I have are main outs/ctrl room outs and tape out. I thought about taking the line out on the card directly to headphones, but then, if i record vocal audio using pre recorded tracks, the singer would never hear herself through the headphones while performing. if this "loop" can't be fixed, what is the ideal setup for this type of situation. maybe i just need another mixer?

Here is my setup:

I have a MIDIMAN connected from keyboard to computer
Comp soundcard OUT goes to Mixer IN
MIXER IN MAIN OUTS go to my speakers
My keyboard OUT goes to MIXER IN
So, all I can think to do to record audio while using my computer software is to somehow go from the mixer to the LINE IN on my card, but this causes this "LOOP" that people keep saying is not ideal.

This way I can hear my keyboard playing and my computer sound through my speaker system. Is this wrong? Is there a better way to connect things without causing this loop? How should this setup be done?

here is a pic of my outputs attached...
