I am looking for desktop nearfield powered monitors and have these two under serious consideration. Please share your experiences/opinions on either or both. Thanks in advance.

Wharfedale- Quad 12L $999 each

The name "QUAD" is an acronym for "Quality Unit Amplified Domestic", used to describe the QUAD I amplifier. In 1983, when having become known for their QUAD range of products, the Acoustical Manufacturing Co. Ltd changed its name to QUAD Electroacoustics Ltd.

In 1995, QUAD Electroacoustics Ltd was bought by Verity Group plc, joining its existing brands of Wharfedale and Mission. A few changes were made, including shifting some loudspeaker production to East China, but the company essentially stayed the same, and still tries to adhere to its ethos of "the closest approach to the original sound".

International Audio Group

The International Audio Group (IAG) is a Chinese manufacturer of consumer and professional audio & HiFi components.

In the past the IAG purchased several British HiFi manufacturers: Wharfedale, Quad Electroacoustics, Mission, Tag McLaren, Audiolab

In this link the fellow compared the Wharfedale 8.2 to the Quad ($2000 pair) and didn't hear a difference? He said the finish is really good on the QUAD cabinet.

I heard a rumor the last merger was so huge they bought themselves out by mistake. It says all IAG is exclusively built in China....with R&D Cad drawings happening in a few locations outisde China.

between your Two choices, I'd go with some Blue Sky One's...just because even the several articles I read all recommend getting a sub with these.

excerpt from the lengthy article...

I don’t think anyone can argue the fact, that the biggest difference in price between the
Wharfedale Pro 8.2 A ($340 pr.), and the Quad 12L /A ($2000 pr.), is in their finish.
The Quad has a real wood finish that is sealed with 7 coats of lacquer and each coat is allowed to dry for 24 hours before the next one is applied. You can’t provide this kind of a quality finish with out putting a heavy price tag on it.
The Wharfedale, on the other hand, is probably assembled, finished and shipped within 24 hours! So this point is a no brainer. If you want a fine furniture finish, in your choice of woods, go with the Quad.
If a grey laminate finish will work for you, save some loot, and go with the Wharfs.

I have the Tannoy Reveal 8D's and love them. I used to own a pair of Alesis M1mk2's and wasn't too happy with them. A pair of 8D's came up b-stock and I got them for a good price. If I were to upgrade these then I'd be looking at PMC, Digidesign, Quested, ADAM, Genelec.
