My local music store has the 414mk11, and everything I've
read on the site only refers to the 424mk11. Are these two
one and the same? Any info much appreciated!

weird that nobody has responded.
i was actually wondering myself if the 424 was all that much better than the 414.

c' mon guys, give us newbs a hand here.

414/424

414 and 424 are sibblings. 414 is a very basic 4-tracker, it's good for throwing down ideas and it might be good to start out with if you haven't done any multitrack recording before. Anything the 414 does, the 424 does better. More inputs, better EQ (3-band against 2-band on the 414), 6 separate channel sliders (it can of course still only record on 4 channels) the 414 has 4. The LED-window on the 424 is much better than the simple channel LEDs on the 414. Tape transport buttons (play/rec/stop etc) are mechanical on the 414, you know like on the old boom boxes when you pushed play you acutually had to PUSH with some physical power. The 424 has electronic transport; you can push buttons with your nose if neccesary. i could go on and on. To sum it up 414 very basic. 424 is better but still basic. You'll grow out of both of them, very quickly and quickly respectively.

If it's down to these two machines and the difference in price is no problem, i'd go for the 424. No question there. But then again these are still analog cassette tape machines. A low budget hard disc MTR isn't that far off in price, but it's light years ahead in sound quality compared to any tape based portastudio.

Cheers and good luck with your recordings,

mm

The 424 will sound better because the signal to noise ratio is higher on the 424. It also records faster than the 414, which will make a clearer recording. The 424 is worth the extra $100.

Entry level digital machines may only be a few hundred dollars more and record 'cleaner', but they don't have any features. The 424 does. Each of the porta units from the 02 --> 424 produce surprisingly good quality recordings imo, with the largest limitation simply being only 4 tracks. That's not always a bad thing, though. Get creative.

So many people stress the superiority of digital over cassette based systems that someone getting into recording could get the impression that the porta units suck. They don't. They're not for professional work by a long shot, but if you're in it for the fun/hobby and don't have any experience, I'd recommend a tape deck every time. Well, the 424 anyway. It has enough features to hang pretty well while you grow into recording.

I'm trying to remember... does the 414 have noise reduction?

I use the 424 mkIII on occasion....along with the other multitrackers i have....

it the best outta all the analog multitrackers definately.....

Thanks for all the good info-since posting that thread
I've been having fun with the recording , but mixing down has proven difficult and time consuming.Purchased
the 424mk111 by the way and it does all I need it to for the time being-thanks again
