Hi there, I'm new to this forum, but thought I'd begin by giving a quick review of a microphone I am currently using, as I think quality vs price is an age old topic to discuss, and while this mic was surprisingly cheap ($40USD) the quality hasn't been too bad.

Apart from some annoying handling noise, the voice recordings I have made have been suitable for what I needed to do (simply some mp3 output for some blogs). With a frequency response of only 50Hz-16kHz I didn't think it would be that great at sound effects recording, though I am surprised.

I've got three examples of recordings I made with the mic and would be interested in peoples opinions, both about the quality of these recordings with a $40 mic and about quality vs price.

Hi,

These clips sound pretty clean. The mic looks like a video mic. I'd like to hear it recording some music.

Any condenser mic will have handling noise. A mic stand is required. A shock mount even better.

The frequency response of 50-16K would be considered an extended frequency response for an interview mic. Many interview mics are 100-10K and for good reason. Voices are all in this range and many of the worst noise problems like traffic and air conditioning rumble are outside of this region. This is why many mics with an extended low end have a bass roll off switch.

I went here

http://buytakstar.com

and found the mic for a little over forty with $15 shipping. Good buy.

The spec wasn't clear. Does this mic have an XLR connector?

They also had two free mics which I thought was weird so I checked the shipping and it was only five bucks. Free mics shipped for five bucks. What a bargain.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

Thanks for the link!
If someone is looking for the small KEL HM-1 mic you´ll find it here!

How about using this mic as a sound effects mic. Like you said, the clips are clean for voice, but I'm wondering how the first sample comes across, the Chinese New Year Fireworks sample, the recording level was a little low but.

I too would like to record some music with this mic to see how it responds.

I thought I'd just update the link for the sample recording of the Takstar microphone as it has been moved. This fireworks sound effects recording shows what the Takstar SGC578, through a MOTU Ultralite, can achieve. It would be great to try some other microphones to compare, so hopefully next fireworks session I can record more.
