Saw the Taj Mahal trio the other night here in Seattle. Love that guy. They put on a great show. I was surprised to see that he was using a Mesa Boogie!
I'll be honest - never been a Boogie fan. I always perceived them as scoop-toned metal amps. I'm not up on all the different models, so I can't say what it was exactly, but it looked like a head and a 1x12 cab that fit together as a matched set, which I thought was kind of weird.
Can somebody indentify it? Just curious.

Aaron - shame on you!

I have been using Boogie's for 20+ years and wouldn't use anything else.

I have never played 'scoop tone metal' and unless something goes incredibly wrong (or right :D ) I never will.

Larry Carlton (well, his tone, anyway) yes. Steve Cropper, sure. Robben Ford? Eric Clapton? Vince Gill? Knopfler? The Rev. Billy Gibbons? All of the above?

Oh yeah!

I have a Mark IV head with a seperate 1 x 12" EV Cabinet. Any sound you want I can get (except maybe the death metal, detuned to nothing, can't distinguish individual notes thrash. And I may be able to get that, I've just never tried).

As a means of judgement, I also have 2 blackface amps - a 65 Pro Reverb and a 66 Vibrolux reverb.

Apart from the 'vintage vibe' thing, the Boogie has it over both of them. And they're both all original and in great shape.

But be warned - once you've had a Boogie, nothing else will do.

Well, I can see I'm gonna have to re-evaluate my perceptions a little, but as for myself, yer gonna have a hard time getting me to take anything over my beloved Rivera Quiana!

It's funny how we all percieve things differently.. I always pictured a boogie as a warm bluesy amp that Clapton or Harrison would use...

Marshalls... Now THATS scooped out and metally... :D:D:D

Now that's funny because I use a Les Paul and Marshall to get a warm bluesy Harrison/Clapton type of tone.

Now see..... I don't think of Marshalls as scooped at all. I think of them as woody and mid-rangey and open sounding ( with the exception of the JCM800/ 900).
I guess I always just associated bands more like NightRanger and Metallica w/ Boogie's. Don't know why.

LISTEN YOU!!!

Don't you ever question my knowledge.. I can play the intro to Smells like Teen Spirit and I know most of the powerchords....

Get Down & Boogie...

I have a Dual Caliber DC-2.

Small.

Tones by the bucket load.

Frikkin' heavy!

25 watts of window-rattling heaven ;)

It's the only amp I've owned. It's the only amp I need. No effects, the only pedals I have are my Boss TU-2 and the channel footswitch.

My Ibanez Artist sings, growls and howls through this amp. I am a happy vegemite :)

Oh and BTW, Taj Mahal plays an Epiphone (at least he did on the TV show I saw him on early this year).

That's what he was playing when I saw him about 1 week ago - A big yellow Epi box. I wouldn't know the model, as I'm not really a hollow-body player, but it sure looked cool, like one of those old Gibson LS5's.

The metal sound you're thinking of would be typical of the Mesa Boogie Rectifier amps. The other amps like the 50 Caliber, Mark IV are the most amazing amps I've heard for blues tones. VERy different from the Rectifier amps.
