hey, i'm looking for some advice on a new track, either general improvements or more specifically mastering advice - at the moment it sounds okay to me through my headphones, but really TERRIBLE through the macbook speakers. obviously i know it's never going to sound great through them but it should at least give a listenable impression, right? i think i'm going mad tinkering with this. (so you know, there is a default pop compressor and average limiter on it currently)

The music sounds tight, but you're right, it the mix sounds flat. Distant, maybe? I'm not sure, I'm not very good at this yet. The drums sound very lo-fi.

Sorry, wish I could be more help. I'm curious what the experienced members would say. I will say that if new monitors can improve my mixes from working with headphones and my home stereo, you'll definitely see an improvement over laptop speakers.

The song is catchy, I can imagine hearing this on the radio.

thankyou!

i love your yesterday cover by the way...not to mention the hugh laurie avatar :)

the drums are a sample from my proper band's recordings that i had an amateur go at mixing, so they will sound a bit lofi, but i was sort of going for that anyway... i cut out a lot of the high end from them, maybe i should put some of that back in. thanks for the advice!

DUDE! I love this. Holy cow! Keep up with this, man. you got something here. I'd buy this!

THere's no sparkle in the vocals. Maybe consider the Motown Exciter process or even something drastic like Sonix Maximiser.
Good song - keep at it.

cheers guys, i've looked up the motown exciter - do you mean double tracking vocals and heavily compressing one? it sounds interesting.

making a few more changes and i'll post again with (hopefully) a more punchy mix
