Syncing Options? Tascams tsr-8 and 32's, digitals, mac

Looks like I didn't do all of my homework before hand... but now I have a tascam tsr8 plus two 32's, plus some digital options. I have also a macbook pro, and I am hoping I can somehow sync at least some, if not all, of these units together.

I know they have remotes that can sync two reel to reels together, but are there any other options, such as software, etc. I was envisioning the mac book pro as the brain of my system, with the vintage (and other) equipment being the body parts. I guess I want my cake and to eat it too. Any advice would be nice, thanks.

Cheers,

Jon

You won't be able to lock all of them together, and frankly I wouldn't try, but you should be able to sync the TSR-8 and the computer.

Easiest would be to run the TSR-8 as master, and have the computer chase it. You can use any old MIDI sync box for that - the Phil Rees TS-1 is good if you can get it - it seems mostly to be a UK thing - otherwise try and get one of the Cooper boxes... someone else will have to give the model though.

If you want to run the TSR-8 as slave and make it chase the computer, you'll need more specialised hardware, probably from TASCAM. I'm currently using an ATS-500 to lock a pair of TSR-8s together. The ATS won't take a MIDI input though... but if you record a timecode to one track of the computer it should accept that quite happily and lock the slave machine to it.
Other units to look at include ES50 and the Midiizer (MTS1000?). If you want to try and make something non-TASCAM work as the sync driver, you're on your own

Either way, you'll have to reserve a track for the timecode. Using track 8 is best since there's already provision for turning off the noise reduction on just that track. That gives you 7 tracks to play with.
Hence, if you were to do tape sync with a model 32, you'll have one track for the timecode and one for the (mono) audio, so why bother? Personally it would be better to use one of the 32s to mix down to.
