Syncing ADAT to Sonar

I got the luxury of getting a yamaha O2R and two LX20 ADATs for free along with cables etc. I know ADATs are a thing of the past and such, but i think i can make it work. I just got an EMU 1212m for the adat input.

My question here is, what is the best way to get the music from ADAT to computer-and sync'd. I would much prefer to do as much editing in sonar as possible, so how should i hook this up? A friend brought up a good point to me, once i exported tracks to sonar, how would i sync and ADAT and sonar together for when I record another track and the artist is listening to the previously recorded one. Ex. Drums tracks were exported to sonar, and rhythem guitarist needs to hear the drum track to play along to...how does that happen?

I know thats really freakin confusing, and a lot of questions, but help me out here.
 
You need a soundcard/interface with either a T/DIF input or an ADAT lightpipe connection.

I use this.. It's a killer card.
 
The RME Hammerfall 9652 card that EZ reccomended is an excellent card for what you are doing. Its affordable and rock solid. Personally, in your situation, I would just use the ADATs as converters and record straight to Sonar through the 9652 card. For that matter, I would probably just bag the ADATs all together and use the O2R as converters and send straight form the O2R to SOnar through the 9652. If the Yamaha does not have enough optical I/O then I would sell the ADAT machines and put that money towards the yamaha add on card:)
 
Unfortunately, money was a large factor in this so i went with the Emu 1212m. It is a decent card for a amazing price-and an Adat i/o. I agree, i would much rather completely bypass the whole S-VHS system and use the Adats as converters. I'm confused as to how the heck i would do that though. I see what you mean about getting the card for the O2R but they are hard to come across and like i said, money is a problem.

So maybe using the Adats as converters is my best bet. How do i do that?

Does the yamaha O2R have digital outs, or do you need to purchase an additional card?
 
Digital outs as in Adat outs? The only thing my board has is the adat output snake of 1/4 cables.

Digital outs as in t/dif OR lightpipe(ADAT).

No, i dont belive I do. I dont have the board with me now. It is at the place in which i record so i cant be positive. I know i dont have a lightpipe input on it. If i dont have either of these what is my best route?

You're looking for either a t/dif or lightpipe OUT, not in.

If you have neither, and can't purchase anything else, like xstatic said, use the ADAT as converters. To do this, you'd run 1/4" outs from the board into the ADAT, then run lightpipe out of the ADAT into the EMU.
 
so, if I do it te second way, does the audio get recorded to the computer in real time or do i hae to transfer it over to the computer after i record.

Real time, I think.

Which is why it'd be better if you could sell the ADATs and buy whatever will give you a digital output from your mixer.

Maybe not better, but more compact. :)
 
Yes, can post a pic tomorrow. Im back home, and do not have axcess to it now. I did look on the back and found a diff. type of digital hookup.

It is a aes/ebu and there are two of them. HERE is the picture of them.

Is this something that i could use?

and also it would be nice if someone could confirm that it WOULD be recorded in live time.
