I've set up both the Sonar settings and the VS880ex as recommended. But when I hit record in Sonar, I get "waiting on 30 fps" message. My midi interface is midisport 2x2 and I just dowloaded the drivers for XP. Any ideas would be helpful.

It seems as if you have Sonar setup as the SLAVE, instead of as the MASTER.

If you want to record into Sonar from the 880, you will need to have Sonar tell the 880 to play.

BTW...... as I re-read your initial post

Which unit is giving you the "waiting on 30 fps" statement (Sonar or the VS880)?

spin

Hey Spin...thanks for the reply.

I get the message in Sonar. I know it is a small setting somewhere that eludes me. I appreciate the tip.

Isn't there an option somewhere on the VS880 to send start and stop messages? Look in the manual...

Or why not try it the other way around? Let Sonar start and stop the VS880.

Here are the settings as sent to me by a fellow forum member a while back...

Connections: Midi-Out of sound card or midi interface to
Midi-In of 880. Midi-Out of 880 to Midi-in of sound card
or midi interface.

If you want the 880 to be the MASTER (what I usually do
- don't ask me why because I don't remember):

In Sonar, go to Options>Project. Click on the clock tab
and under Source choose midi sync.
Under SMPTE/MTC, select 30 frame non-drop.

On the 880:
1. Press SYSTEM until "Sys Sync/Tempo?" is displayed.
Press YES/ENTER.
2. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select Source=INT.
3. Press PARAMETER>> until "Syn:Gen=" is displayed. Use
the TIME/VALUE dial to select MTC.(Roland says MIDIclk,
but they're wrong)
4. Press SYSTEM until "SYS MIDI PRM?" is displayed.
Press YES/ENTER.
5. Press PARAMETER>>until "MIDI Thr=" is displayed. Use
the TIME/VALUE dial to select OUT.

Click Play in Sonar. It will wait for you to press Play
on the 880.
I believe that Sonar may automatically chase if you hit
Play on the 880 first.

If you want Sonar to be the MASTER

In Sonar go to Options>Project.
1. Click on the clock tab and under Source choose
SMPTE/MTC.
Under SMPTE/MTC, select 30 frame non-drop.
2. Click the Midi Out tab and select Transmit MMC.
3. Set the Timecode Master's Unit ID to 17.

On the 880
1. Press SYSTEM until display reads "SYS Sync/Tempo?"
Press YES/ENTER.
2. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select Source=INT.
3. Press PARAMETER>> until "Syn:Gen=" is displayed. Use
the TIME/VALUE dial to select MTC.
4. Press PARAMETER>> until "Syn:MTC Type=" is displayed.
Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select 30.
5. Press SYSTEM until display reads "SYS MIDI PRM?"
Press YES/ENTER.
6. Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select Device ID=17.
7. Press PARAMETER>> and use the TIME/VALUE dial to
select MIDI Thr=Out.
8. Press PARAMETER>> and use the TIME/VALUE dial to
select SysEx.Rx=On.
9. Press PARAMETER>> and use the TIME/VALUE dial to
select MMC=Slave.

Click Play in Sonar and the 880 will follow.

Here are the settings for using the 880 as a control suface....

These are for controlling a VSR with the 880ex. Just substitute "Sonar" for
"VSR." You may have to play with these two...

880EX
System Prg?
SYS Master Clk=digin 1

Midi Prg?
SYS MID: MIDITHR = Out
SYS MID: SysEx.Rx = off
SYS MID: SysEx.Tx = on
SYS MID: MMC = MASTER
SYS MID: CtrLoca l= On ( to run the EX Controls==To run VSR controls w/out
changing EX controls, set this to Off )
SYS MID: CtrType = Excl ( to run the VSR controls==To run the EX controls with
out changing VSR controls, set this to Off )
SYS MID: P.C. Scne = On
SYS MID: P.C. Eff = On

SYS Sync/Tempo?
SYS Syn: Source = INT
SYS Syn: Gen.= MTC
SYS Syn: ErrLevel = 5
SYS Syn: MTC Type = 30

Make sure you have midi out on the 880 to midi in on your pc soundcard and vice
versa. If you don't have another midi port you are SOL if you want to do midi
input to Sonar at the same time.

In Sonar, select internal sync as you don't want the 880 and the PC to be
"rolling" at the same time in this scenario.

In Sonar, you want to use Remote control. Right click on the control you want to
automate and set it to the proper control number and midi channel. Click on
learn and move the control on the VS. The control number will set automatically.

Thanks Acid....you guys are reallyhelpful here in this forum.
Regards.

I'll try the settings and post results.

Welll thanks to all who helped I'm good to go.
I have the choice of controlling the transport either from the VS880 or Sonar. It took me several attempts to load the drivers for the midiman 2x2 before it actually was recognized in Sonar...very strange. I have a new problem but I'll probably post that in a new thread.

Thanks again.

The VS-880ex is a great recorder and still very relevant.I saw what they were getting on E-bay for them and knew that it was worth more to me than I could sell it for.
Of course new and better units come out everyday, but sometimes obsolescense is driven more by marketing than the hardware.

GOOD LUCK!

Did same thing with a yamaha md8, I used the MD8 as the master and Sonar as slave. when sonar was waiting for sync I just pressed play on the md8 and that was it. very useful when havin a 2 in 2 out sound card. I can record drums anywhere and dump it on sonar after (track by track)
