I have the HomeStudio version of cakewalk and I'm just wondering if it is any possibility to connect a mixer console to the computer, with homestudio, to do the mixing? Would I have to have special equipment for that? I could extract the songfile that is recorded in my recorder and inport the files to homestudio. Any suggestions, comments?

I sort of have a setup like you're describing... I think... I track to an Alesis HD24XR and use a mackie 8 buss for monitoring and playback purposes. I then fireport the tracks into CW for editing and sometimes mixing. Sometimes I'll edit stuff on CW to get it about how I want then firewire the new tracks (with volume info) back to the HD24. I can then use my analog board and outboard gear... if the project and my mood warrants.

As I reread your post, I'm thinking this isn't quite what you had in mind. Are you wanting a board with "real" faders and knobs to control the CW? I think there is such a beast for ProTools, but have never heard of anything like that for CW.

i found a program called "digidesign protools le 6.4 software upgrade " on musicians friend for around $80.
when you mentioned 'protools' where you refering to the software or a hardware device?

Can I ask why you want to do this? Normally you would mix within Homestudio.

If you just want the feel of real faders - as opposed to a mouse - there are interfaces made that will allow you to use hardware to control the faders in Homestudio. For ex. http://www.behringer.com/BCF2000/index.cfm?lang=ENG
(This is not a recommendation, just an example - although I think there are peopel on this board using it)

Just for the record, Pro Tools is a hardware/software combination (not all combinations include a mixer-type controller).

The thing I've seen is a hardware device. It's been a while, but I think you moved the faders on the board and the movements were sent to the PC. I want to say that the faders were servo driven and moved automatically but as I think about it, that sounds a little to "star trek" now...
