there's a metal pole in the new space I'm setting up in. it rings like a sonofabitch. simply putting my hand on it is enough to do away with the ringing. what would you use to dampen it, besides my hand?
Detune it...like a fretted instrument, add mass or change the physical wave length of the thing to a higher/different range of freqs. Try a work shop clamp...clamp a piece of wood or other heavy object bout half way up the pole. That might do it.
Anyway, so this bud of mine has this tubular (can't recall the name) drum rack/frame kit thingy in for some music, and I stop the session a couple of times going 'what the hell is that feed back/ringing?' Clap clap, test test.. Finaly I go wait a minute, smack your snare a few times. Smack-eeee, smack-eeee, grab- SMACK.
Duck tape to the rescue.
thanks everybody, and ethan for the most creative answer except for possibly the pole dancer. I'll probably start out the easy way and just try some cloth duct taped to it, if that doesn't work I'll move up in the difficulty level. I'm about to post about this new room of mine, any advice is appreciated.

That's hilarious. I ran into this same problem tonight! It took me a good 15 minutes of just staring at the drumset to figure out what was going on. I wish I would have read this beforehand.

I agree... the pipe is acting like a string on a guitar..it is held rigid at each end. Damp the pipe by adding mass to it ..change the resonant frequency of the pipe using mass at a peak or null..which you find by experimenting till it disappears. You might use large wormdrive hose clamps. They're available even up to 10" diameters. Anyway, thats my opinion and I'm sticking to it
