Swissonic Converters clicking after several hours operation

Hallelujah.

Thank you SonicAlbert and xstatic for your suggestions…

I got a BNC cable and connected the Swissonic to the RME (RME master) using Word Clock and that resolved the "clicking" issue. I'm back in business with the Swissonic unit...

Someone on this board suggested that I use the Swissonic unit as the master....and that worked fine for almost a year (in the case...the timecode in the ADAT signal was locking to the RME Multiface in "Autosync" mode). This makes me think that a non-dedicated internal clock can deteriorate from heat and usage in a short amount of time. If so, this underscores the importance of an external clock.

xstatic... I would place the RME stuff a bit lower on the ladder than the "midrange converter category", so I'm kinda curious what units you're talking about when you say "Even high quality converters can benefit form a good stable clock source".

There are times when I will use one converter over the other because of the sound of the clock [realize that my day gig is in a kinda 'special place' where I get to play with stuff most folks can't afford... I don't say this to be snotty, I say this to give a perspective on where I'm going with this]. The clock in the RADAR sounds different than the clock in the HEDD, which sounds different than the clock in the Lavry... so I will actually pick different A/D converters when tracking [not a luxury most people have, I'm not obtuse], and have at times run one converter off another converter's clock because I liked the sound of the analog electronics in one converter, but like the color another converter imparted with it's clock.

While an external clock can indeed be one of the best investments a project studio can make in it's future... it is also a possibility to get a "high end" converter and a clock distribution box and run your whole rig off the clock in the A/D converter.

I have a Nuendo rig in addition to the RADAR... the Neundo rig runs off an RME card, that generally gets clocked off the RADAR. The sound of the Neundo rig improves 10 fold when the RADAR clock is the DAW's master clock...

Simmons, it actually may be a little hard to say without further experimentation whether it was the Swissonic or RME messing up. Since the RME was clocking to the Swissonic, isn't it possible that it was the RME that was losing it's ability to lock properly? You said when you took the Swissonic out the RME didn't click. But that could be because it was clocking to it's own internal clock. It's probably the Swissonic that's not right, as you suspect, but you'd really need a third clock source to properly check both units.

I'm saving for Lucid GenX6 96...

Best price I've seen for the unit is $595 at 8th Street. Anyone see a better deal?
