With OS optimization for PC multitracking, is setting the Swap File size necessary if the amount of RAM is sufficient.
I am running Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 on Win98SE; & my RAM is at 512 MB. When running Cakewalk, all of my background apps are off; & I only use two plug-ins (SoundForge & Auto-Tune.)

I know I've asked this question before, but I am just concerned that, since the swap file probably won't get utilized when working with digital audio apps, will having it set affect my working with other forms of multitasking, such as running several graphics & imaging apps simultaneously?

Here's my specs:

PC:

Dell Dimension 700 (PIII 700 / 100MHz)
Intel 440BX AGP Chipset
512 MB SD/RAM
Maxtor 40GB Hard Drive (Cakewalk App)
Maxtor 60GB Hard Drive (WaveData Folder)
Echo Audio GINA24 / Isolated on IRQ3

Windows 98SE:

Virtual Memory (Swap File): Min = 1024MB Max = 1024MB

Read Cache [vcache]:
MinFileCache=16384 MaxFileCache=16384

Write-Behind Cache:
Disabled

Read-Ahead Optimization / PC Role:
None / Network Server

Graphics Hardware Acceleration:
2nd Notch From Right

Wave Audio Device: Do Not Use Device

Double Buffering: Setting unchanged

IDE Disk Drive Mode (DMA): Automatic

With Windows 98, I simply wouldn't do it. 98 is unstable as it is, but also fair to poor at managing memory. You may have a lot to gain by turning it off (performance-wise), but I would play with it for awhile and see if she holds. Reliability is important too...maybe more so than performance when it comes down to it.

Even with 98, I would probably opt for at least 1 GB of RAM before attempting to run without VM. Thats my thoughts anyway.

STOPPPPPPP.... Windows 98 can only run 512MB of RAM!!! It won't run with any more.

I would use VM... the way you have it set up, ie min and max the same value means that the system isn't changing the size of the file taking up processor power. You want it set up so it isn't changing the size of the file!! I'm personally running XP with 512 MB of RAM and about a 1GB Swap file.

yep set it to 2x the amount of your physical memory. min and max same values.

Thanks...

Thanks everyone...very informative [also: cool site (annoyances.com.)

Thanks again,

Yes... everything is OK now. For what it is worth everyone around me (and I work in an IT department) didn't know about that!!!
