I've been wanting to setup surround sound out of my computer. I do not use this machine specifically for recording, I play games, watch movies, listen to music, etc.. and would like to be able to have surround while doing those things.

Now I've got a Presonus Firebox, and I am curious as to whether or not it would be possible for me to setup surround using this. Is there some sort of software (windows xp) that I can map each signal to specific outputs, or will I need to get some sort of DAC for this? Any help would be awesome!

According to Presonus, the Firebox will do surround, but your software has to support it.

I use a Mac so I can't be much help in that regard. But perhaps doing a few web searches will scare up some software app that will route the audio the way you want it.

I do surround mixing in my living room home theater using Sonar and a Firebox. It works great! In Sonar you pick which of the six outputs to use from each bus and that's it. As I recall outputs 1 & 2 are the front left and right, 3 & 4 are the center and sub, and 5 & 6 are the rears. Of course, you also need a consumer receiver or six powered speakers etc to connect from the FireBox outputs.
