Im trying to figure out how to get my boy a way to record his music but i dont know where to start or what to do. I need help!!! eheh. I think i need to find a software for his computer and but i need mics and all that as well but i dont know where to start. Please help me out! Thank you! :)

What's your budget, and what kind of music will he be recording?

Beware that if you do this, you may lose all contact with him as he goes to live in the spare room/'studio'!!!:)

If he has a half-decent computer, softare can be had for pretty cheap or even free!

Mics ... don't buy anything from Radio Shack! There are some good ones for very little money though.

Give us more details and we'll help you out.

More data please, especially the budget. What you've asked is, "I need a way to get my boyfriend to work, what should I buy him?" A transit pass? A used bicycle? A new Ferrari? I can answer your question from $200 to $200,000.- Richie

Ok Richie - answer me for $200k but bear in mind, you have to buy a percentage of that gear in return for me reading your highly helpful posts. Deal?

Actually, Noisedude, you have to buy *me* a percentage of that gear for acting as your consultant. We're going to need several acres in Vermont, and a 60 X 60 prefab. Then you get to nail studs for about 8 weeks and hang a lot of rock wool. Then the dedicated HVAC system, the double glass windows, and the hand buffing of the hardwood floors in the B room. Then all we need is a Martech, a Pendulum, an Avalon, a Neve console, some DPA's, some Schoeps, some Neumanns, a bunch of good dynamics, a ton of Canare cable, and we're good to go. Hope you like soldering. LOL-Richie

I'll happily do the work if you buy the gear. I'll even let you record some of that zany folk music of yours when it's built!:)

my girlfriend bought me a 4 track fostex recorder for my birthday, probably about the coolest gift every. i think 4 tracks are nice to start out with cause you can pretty much take them anywhere, you can use them to record music onto your computer, and they're easy enough to use that anyone can record with one. but, if its stuff for the computer youd like to get him there are tons of programs , i've used acid 4.0 , its pretty nice and i dont think its too expensive either,. just shop around and ask a lot of questions when you're buying it, and as far as mics, when i first started out i used a cheap computer mic, which worked but didnt sound great, now i use a shure pg 57 mic, which still isnt "great" but sounds nice for what i'm doing,. the pg series sure mics are around 60 dollars new, some shops though around here are trying to sell them at over 100 dollars

perfect solution !

just invite a girlfriend to stay over...that'll supprise him more than you'll know. Right guys? LOL.
(terrible joke)
ya gotta laugh !(at how bad that is)

well...ok...mabie not a great idea, but I do know about recording, having just worked all the bugs out of my set-up.
Advice is always free
