I was in a similar situation using a Creative card but couldn't take the bugginess while recording. I finally got an NI Komplete Audio 6 interface and haven't looked back. I'm very happy with it. It comes bundled with Cubase 5 AE, which I subsequently upgraded to Cubase 7 LE AI Elements for only $49.99. The KA6 also includes several Native Instruments plugins like Guitar Rig and Tracktor. I've found that I can get a great guitar sound going direct through the interface and using a either a Steinberg of NI VST. I haven't even bothered to run direct/mic my L6 Vetta II. I really like the fact that you can record clean, and tailor the sound as you mix and produce. I've since added an M-Audio Axiom 25 for a midi controller. It's absolutely amazing what you get and can create on a modest budget. All in, I think I've spent about $350 give or take. I haven't had to purchase a mic though.

Did I have a hand in that decision P? I have loaned my KA6 out to a fellow tekky on another forum. He was interested to know how one would work on Linux. Fine as it happens. In fact he tells me the interface works on any computer he throws it at!

You mentioned a mic? If you are thinking of micci'ng up a guitar amp or some lusty yodelling at 50mm or less then a decent dynamic is fine, the SM57 is the go-to but there are plenty of very good dynamics around now at 1./2 the price.

However, if you want to record speech or acoustic guitar you will wish the KA had 6 or so dB more gain. It does not really matter however because even with the gains at max, noise is still very low and we have made some good acoustic guitar recordings that way. But an SDC is rather more versatile. I have two AKG P150s.

Dave.
