why thank you, i appreciate the endorsement.

no i haven't bought into any such world-view, but you came on here wanting to know what the best for your dough was. you got answers and then kinda went off and ignored. which is fine but please don't tell me you can make a high-quality record on a four-track.

the point of the digital revolution is that now people with little money can make good recordings. if four-track was that good then pcs wouldn't have taken over in the home studio.

finally i know all about quality of musicians etc, but your comment was that you heard a great recording due to the musicians. whilst that may be true, the actual 'recording'-ness of it was inevitably not that great because as you said it was on a fostex 4-track.

EDIT - hang on i got you and the original guy mixed up. so i don't actually know you and what your place in recording is - anything that does not apply i retract wholeheartedly!!!!

Actually I've been a recording engineer for 40 years. Coming from an analog background, mixing in a computer is all new to me. At this time I have a D&R Cinemix console, Mackie SDR24/96 Hard Disk system, Toby Referance monitors, Echo Layla, and a newly obsolete PC. I'm not here to be a wise butt. Just trying to learn and pay for my schooling with my knowledge base.
 
may i offer my sincerest and most embarrassed apologies. i'm tired and wasn't reading the screennames so i just assumed you were geet. i still dispute your claim over master quality 4-tracks but all other comments i take back! sorry!!!! :( :(

No problem. For the record.... if you take those same Excellent musicians and put them into a Class A Studio, they will sound better than the Fostex session. But you knew that. These days it doesn't take a tremendous amout of talent as a player due to the Digital revolution. I started when we only had one track and everybody had to get it right or completely re-record the entire thing. That takes a lot of talent. If you ever get a chance to listen to some "Direct to disk" recordings, it will make you respect the early players and engineers even more.

PRW, have you ever heard any of the Shefield Labs recordings? I believe the console went directly to a lathe. Unbelievable quality.
 
Absolutely! Kuchka Kahn was my favorite. I use to hang out in the LA area when those were done. Now those were excellent musicians and she is still a great singer. I'm not sure about the spelling of her name. Does the name Lincoln Myorker ring a bell? Again, not sure about the spelling.
 
Sorry that I'm basically disregarding all the suggestions being made.. to problem is that they're out of my price range.

I guess I should just save up and buy something that will actually supplement my needs. For now, I should be able to make it by fine just borrowing stuff. It's just a pain in the tuckus.

geet73, good luck with your decisions. I have one final suggestion for you. When you're considering purchasing something from ebay you shouldn't post a link to it here, you're just inviting people with an interest in recording, sound and music(lots of them here) to compete with you should they believe you have a good deal going. Just my 2 cents worth :)
 
geet, although the D&R mic pres are one of the best, they are much less than Focusrite and some others they compete with. Save you money and get the D&R when you can afford it. You will not be sorry.
 
i can't help thinking i've lost track of this thread ever since i didn't bother reading it properly, but he was talking about needing 6 or more pres. does he not need something more like a mixer for the dough? cos it's gonna cost a bomb to buy 6 or 8 channels of d+r. but then he was talking about getting the behri tube pre so what do i know......................:rolleyes: :confused:

I was saying about the Behringer tube pre because of the need of two extra preamps if I had gotten a mixer with 6 pre's.

Would this Alesis really be a bad investment? Has anyone heard any bad news about Alesis preamps? It would be $300 to buy new.. I'm just assuming it has to be about the same quality preamps that something around the same price range would have.

I don't know anything about the quality of anything. I just know Mackies have a very good reputation, and Behringers have very mixed reviews.

It seems to be getting good reviews on other sites... who knows.
 
The differance in a D&R Mic Pre and stuff like Behringer and Mackie is like the differance in a Ford and Mercedes. If cost is a major problem, you can't beat the Mackie but the quality is just not there. Once you own a D&R you'll never want anything else.

That's a very bold statement bro:D

D&R is a Dutch manufacturer and makes very decent gear, but don't tell this to the guys who own Neve boards.

I have a DDA-AMR 44 and wouldn't trade it with any D&R.
 
geet i think if you're looking at recording 6 mics at once you should attempt to buy something that can do that. i'll say again - the yamaha MG series mixers are great VFM and much better quality than behringers. i didn't originally give you an example price because i'm in the UK but is the one you should get:

this will cost around a hundred dollars i expect. it has SIX preamps, two of which are found on stereo channels but they switch to mono+mic mode when you plug mics in. this is pretty much the same price as the behringer UB1204 which i own, and only has 4 pres.

buy it buy it buy it.

some people prefer these to mackies and being a yammy it will stick around and you can always use it for live applications, home cinema, loads of stuff, if you outgrow it for recording.
