Hi,

I am doing a research project on language learning and would appreciate help in choosing suitable s/w. I'm an ex IT guy so the PC don't frighten me - but an easy learning curve so I can get up and running would be nice.

As of tomorrow I will have a M-AUDIO MOBILE PRE. I have a quality microphiome and a CD player and an XP system with 200 gig of HD. So hardware wise I'm sorted. ( I hope :-) )

What I think I plan to do is ...

Lay down a backing track from CD - then merge it with one or more voice tracks. The music will come from a CD. The speech from me and the microhone.

Problem is that the speach is not like a song. I want to be able to record a word and then ideally have the s/w repeat times at Y second intervals - so I don't have to sit there saying "fish" for an hour :-((

THEN I need to be able to edit some of "words" e.g speed them up or slow them down / change the pitch, add echo, reverb etc.

really cool would be able to locate the words in 5.1 - if that not too much to ask.

then ... mix all the individual tracks into one wav / mp3 / cda file.

budget is important but not crucial

Questions:

What I don't know is whether I'd be best off using one program to do it all or would I be better with separate programs for recording / editing / mixing.

As I don't have the h/w yet I haven't been able to play with any demo's and to be honest I have no idea which to DL anyway. I'm confused by all the new words !! e.g the guy I bought the h/w from said " you need a wave editor and sequencing program".
another said Cool Edit or Sound Forge, another cubase.

Although budget is important - I'm interested in sound quality and ease of use as I hope to publish what I do. Also I'm an amatuer opera singer and eventually I'd like to be able to record the Opera compny and produce a CD to swell the funds - so a higher end program might be worth the investment .

Any ideas / suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

You can do all as you say with one program. Cool edit will do it but is lower end software. Sound Forge is more geared at editing. Perhaps, Sonar (Cakewalk programs) Logic Audio, PTLE would be best suited for 24/44.1 recordings. And by all means get a good mic !

As Stealthtech said any of those programs would handle all your tasks without a problem. Cool Edit is now called Adobe Audition which is a great choice and Soundforge is another best.
Almost all the wave editing software would do your Y second interval repeats and your music bkrds for speech. You dont really need 5.1 for speech adn stuff, they are pretty expensive, but you can create spacial effects with two speakers, so don't worry. Try the Demos and you'll find the right one. Good Luck!

thanks for the info guys - I been asking around locally too and the consensus seems to be Logic or Cubase VST.
