I want to upgrade my existing cables, I have the cheap-o Hosa cables.

I know Monster are good, but am curious on what other brands are out there to check out? Definetly looking for the most bang for my bucks....as in cheap but good. ;)

And if you know of an online retailer that sells them that would be great!

Thanks!

mogami is just as good as monster cable except it isnt as overpriced as the latter.

Canare's good too, and not as expensive as Monster.

Alright cool, would any of you know of an online store that sells either Canare and Mogami?

AND

If the cables come with the connectors already hooked up? I am terrible with a solder-iron.....

Canare (and Mogami) cables, competitive prices, already finished, custom work,*good* people.
I make all my own cables, when time permits- but when time does not permit, I call these guys.

And no, I'm not a stockholder: I discovered these guys by reading _this site_.

If you do not have their catalog- or call and request it very soon- you are missing the point. Even if you make all your gear, you need these guys. Check them out- you will not regret it.

Hmm, so I take it I NEED to order a catalog from them in order to order some cables eh? Their website is rather difficult to navigate around...

Hey this is Nutdotnets bro. I just want to update on that We have decided to buy Bulk Cable and Connectors and do the labor our selfs. We are going to try to find the stuff around town (Anchorage, AK) but I dont think that is going to happen. Can anyone recomend the brands of cables and conectors and places to order online with a pretty straigh forward website with good prices?

Hey holmes, it is OURSELVES not "our selfs"... ;)

Canare 603 - KILLER cable

The Canare 603 is the best stuff for making all your mic cables. I also suggest Switchcraft for the XLR's.
I'm slowly replacing all the mic cables in my studio that way. If you're not great with an iron, do like I do.....hire someone good to make them for you.

Markertek - Canare Star Quad

Make em!

You do not really want to spend the money on Monster as you will never see the benefit most likely and for the cost it is not economical. I recommend trying to get some good quality 16-18g bulk cable and switchcraft and neutrik connectors (depending on your needs) which you can usually get really cheap from the local electrical supply place that specializes in this. I even got XLR wall plates and blanks. THen get a greeat soldering iron and practice on those hosas and then start making your own cables. You will find that you save and enormous amount on costs and you will be recycling a lot of good cable as well. This skill is a must for anyone in music. Hope this helps. Peter

Definitely check out hotwiredcables.com
They use high quality cable (Mogami, Canare), high quality connectors (Switchcraft, Neutrik), and they are cheap and fast. I have nothing but great things to say about these guys.

A very timely topic for me. I came here specifically to see if anybody else had trouble with Hosa cables. I just bought a pair of insert Y-cables that are both Hosa. I would have liked to have gotten something else but after going to nearly every music and hi-fi store in St. Louis all I ever found by way of insert Y-cables was Hosa so I was stuck. Besides, it's just insert cabling and I figured, "how bad could they be for that?" Well, let me tell you, this stuff is terrible! I'm actually picking up radio stations with my effects units running these Hosa Y-cables! And the humm is unbelievable too. I was replacing some old Switchcraft cables that worked great. I only replaced them because I needed some that were a tad longer.

I have to wonder if Hosa cables are even sheilded? I've looked up and down the packages they came in and it says nothing on them about it being sheilded anywhere. With the humm and radio interferience I'm picking up it leads me to believe they must not be sheilded at all. Why the heck are music stores bothering to sell unshielded cables to begin with?

I know there are some other guys who come to this website from St. Louis. Do any of you know a place in town I can get Swistchcraft cables? I've looked everywhere I can think of and just can't seem to find it anymore.

BTW, I agree with the Monster cable assessment. Not near enough there to warrant that kind of price. How hard is it to carry 5 lousy volts? You could do that on a strand of hair. What you're really paying for is good shielding and sturdy connections. That shouldn't be very hard or expensive to make.
