Suggestions on a one mic setup

I gig regularly with a bluegrass band. We're changing to a one mic setup for our live shows.

Any suggestions on a good large diaphragm condensor mic for under $1000 for live application?

Our banjoist has a good mic for recording in the studio, but we wouldn't use that for live shows.

P.S. We'll probably also add 2 SM57s at waist height in a V for instrumental breaks.

I have good results with a single 4033.

I know it's lower end, but if you have a chance to try out an AKG perception 200, do it. I use mine for live acoustic stuff and love it. It's actually a pretty decent value.

Edit: And I won't have a heart attack if it gets knocked over...

Get two 4050's, you'll get much better coverage

I thought it was part of the Bluegrass thing to only use one mic, no?

Might be cool to use two mics in M/S, then dial in a very small amount of side to just give a little dimension to the track. Unless that's a Bluegrass no-no of course.

It is, at least for traditional style bluegrass (everybody around one mic and stepping up for solos).

I'd agree with all the recommendations of the AT's for this. Many major acts use the 4033 ir the 4050 in a live setting. I don't think you can really go wrong with either, although the 4050 is more versatile.

I've been into bluegrass for 32 years and I've never seen a bluegrass band using just one microphone. Even at Bill Monroe's Beanblossom Festival in 1975, every band used multiple microphones. Obviously, if you have singing and are in a large room or outside, you'll need more than one mic!

Now, in the old-time radio broadcasts or recording sessions, one mic was often used because, in a small room, it will sound better than multiple mics. Especially if it's an RCA 44!

Guess you haven't seen Del McCoury.

One mic, lot's of jumping in and out of the sweet spot.
