I am wondering how i can wire or build a switch or something so that i can turn off my monitors at the same time. My monitors are on stands beside my desk so they are to far to just lean over and flip the switch. This may seem really lazy, lol but if im recording and need to cut both the monitors real fast i have no good way of doing this.

So any suggestions on a good way of doing this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Get an extension cord going out of the power outlet, and plug both monitors into the extension cord.

With the price of small mixers these days, bring the output of your sound interface into a mixer then to the monitors and just haul down the appropriate faders as required. Depending on the facilities in the mixer, you might also be able to use the same unit to create your headphone monitor feed.

Depending on the monitors, switching them off and on at the mains might create some unpleasant (and potentially driver-destroying) pops.

Right...don't you have one of them VOLUME KNOB thingies...? :D

While I do have a Control Room volume knob on my console, along with A/B monitor buttons...and while I do have the software volume/output faders on my DAW converter interfaces...
...I picked up one of these TC Electronics Level Pilot knobs, that I wired in so no matter what is feeding my main monitors, I could control both their levels simultaneously.

The way my gear is set up, I have my monitors normalled to my analog desk via patchbay....but I can also patch them to anything I want in the studio, so this Level Pilot is a real handy way to have volume control since the monitprs have no volume pots...and shutting them on/off is not the best way to go.

am I missing something? what about the volume knob/fader?

Some mixers don't separate the mains from the headphones. Turning down the mains would turn down the headphones, also. I use a power strip.

Well yeah, that's true. He wasn't asking about volume, he wanted to shut them off though, so I thought this was the easiest way :D
Personally, I would never do that though lol.

I hooked up mine to a power strip and use that switch

I use a remote-controlled mains switch.

I plug both into the same wall socket via a 4-way extension and turn it on and off via the remote control.

Easy.

You can also get these (Maplins is where I got mine) with the remote looking like a normal wall light switch.

Works perfectly (though make sure to get the higher capacity version).

I don't think most active monitors care if you just shut down the power to them from a power strip. My TR8's and KRK's don't pop. My NS10's separate power amp doesn't make a pop when shut down either. The only time a get a pop is if I power down the interface before speakers. Just power down speakers before any input devices. :)

why don't you just make up a two channel cut switch? It'd be pretty simple to build. It'll pop waaay less than powering them on and off too.

Mackie Big Knob... it's the muts nuts, you can route everything through it...
Mackie - Big Knob

Yeah...those are great for certain setups, but overkill if you need to only control the level of one pair of monitors, which the TC Electronics Level Pilot does at about 1/4 the cost of the Big Knob.

In my setup, my analog console has all the features of the Big Knob....but the Level Pilot was a great addition that I could use when not needing the console to be powered (when working just off my DAW).
