If it was going through a PA cab assuming you are not distorting the speaker why would would you want to mic it? The PA cab isn't changing the sound becuase it is designed NOT to change the sound. So you are gunna want a guitar amp cabinet. I won't bother trying to tell you what to get cause I aint had much experience with different amps, but I use a boss vf-1 amp simulater which is nice but it doesn't really replace an amp, it is more convinient and can give me some of the wackier soud effects, thats why im saving up for a laney half stack cause they are good for metal.

I tend to agree with MrSong BUT that may be fine and true once you've already got equipment and stuff , but it cannot be taken literally, how could you possible record a heavy metal track with an acoustic??? It aint gunna happen, you need a certain ammount of gear to start off with, for beginners it is a long time before they get to that stage, it would sound offputting hearing someone say that it doesn't matter what equipment you've got you can make as good tracks as with anything basically if your tracks were medicore cause that would mean there is no prospect of them getting better other than being a better guitarist.

Your'e all getting so hyper you missed the question. Man you say "effects" in a crowded room full of musicians and engineers and everyone goes haywire.

To answer your question, if you can afford the extra cash, buy an Eventide, there's nothing that compares, and it's what all the pros use.

If you can't afford that go Lexicon.

mmmmmmm eventide..... mmmmm....

Eventide soudns great except for that little question it poses me:

New car or new guitar effects box???

Kinda hard to pick. Sure they soudn great, and all the pro's use them (pro's can afford things like that), but they are also almost 4 grand. Fuck that. My opinion.

My straight forward answer would be that I have used a Rocktron Pro GAP for 12 years (the first version). It is actually one of the first "modeling" based preamps. I used to play more metal stuff and it was FANTASTIC. By far the best thing I had heard. Also, the hush functions allow you to play with the highest gain settings, at loud volumes and still bea able to cut a chord/not out without ANY noise or feedback (though you can dial it way down and get musical feedback. It still sounds great, though I use now lower gain settings which sound good but is probably the biggest weakness of the unit. The clean sounds as well are fantastic. Has an effects loop and the ability to channel switch analog gear (like amp channels or effects) which is really handy, and direct out. There are 2 or 3 on ebay now for between $75 and $150. Well worth it. There were other verisions, one that looked the same with square buttons on the front (second version). A friend had this and it seemed more cheaply made, and had an external power supply. The last versions looked more like other "modern" rocktron racks, all black with blue lcd. I used to get soooo many compliments on my tone whenever I would play somewhere. I am hopeful that some of it had to do with my hands (to refer to the other posts), but I know this thing sounds good.

eventide, lexicon, the original question was about having a rack based guitar amp system when i think that eventide and lexicon don't spring to mind. More like marshall, boss etc. How confusing must all this read???

cheers
