Suggestions for external hard drive

What do you guys suggest? I'd like to have it over 100 gigs, but I don't know anything about brands or any of that stuff.

And also, I'd like to be able to use it with multiple computers, I don't know if there's something you need in order to do that..
 
Depends on what you mean by multiple computers. Are you using just PCs or Macs as well? Generally, Western Digital hard drives will hold up pretty well for ya, and they are one of the better-known brands.

That's a reputable online site that you can get good deals on... the search is already laid out for Western Digital external drives. If you buy in-store at a place like Best Buy, you will end up paying more than you need to. Hope that helps - any more questions, feel free to ask!

One thing I'm unsure about is whether or not I'll be able to use it with my computer at the same time, I.E. have music on the hard drive and be able to play it on my laptop, or would it lag, or if it's even possible.
 
Do you mean play music off the external drive from the computer its attached to? You should definitely be able to play audio from it in realtime... how old is the computer you are hooking it to? Does it have USB 2.0 capabilities, or just USB 1.0? I don't recall, but I think you'd probably even be fine playing video from the external even if it were connected at the far slower USB 1.0/1.1.
 
When you say multiple computers, you mean at the same time right?

If so, you probably want to look at a network hard-drive, which can be plugged into a router. I record onto a laptop, save onto this hard-drive, then edit the tracks using a different laptop. Saves time from transferring files and everything, and I can also play mp3s over the network absolutely fine.

Look at Maxtor products. I think they come in 300 or 500. There's also 1TB (1000GB) but that might be a waste if you're only planning on 100GB.

Yeah, pretty much. The computer is around 3 years old, so it's not too old. So it'll be fine? Cool.
 
No, google checkout is a competitor to paypal in some regards that is. You give google you credit card numbers, email, address, blah, blah, then you can checkout at many websites with your google account instead of maintaining a million passwords and having your credit info in a million places google is trying to get that down to just them. But hay its $20 off $50 right now at buy.com, on a $120 hard drive that is close to what 17% off or so. Doubt you can find that drive for $99 shipped, anywhere else.

Um...... no. Preferably FireWire if you're planning to use it for audio. I'm a big fan of Western Digital in that reagrd, though Seagate drives will do in a pinch.

Well audio in the sense of just mp3's and stuff. I've got 6000 songs clogging up like, 20 gigs of space, plus pictures and shit I'd like to get off my laptop so it ran faster. I don't even think my laptop has a firewire plug in... nope. just checked.

Well in that case a USB drive will do just fine. I still stand by my brand reco's as far as reliability, though.

And the cost of them?
 
There are a couple of high performance solutions above firewire. You might consider network attached storage (NAS) or external SATA (eSATA). eSATA in particular gives you considerable bang for the buck at a rather attractive price point.
