Hello Yall,
I need some suggestion for a all in one type of mixer / track recorder for tracking and semi-mixing a 5 piece band. Im assumming the most I could get would probably be 16 channels which should be fine for what we wanna do. The only problem that I am seeing with these devices are the lack of XLR jacks.
I would be tracking as follows:
Drums = 1 kick mic, 1 snare/ Hi Hat mic , 2 Overheads or maybe 1 overhead and 1 over the two toms. I could use non-phantoms like sm57s, but would like to pull out at least 2 LDCs for the overheads.
Bass = DI
Guitar = 1 mic on the cab ( non phantom) would like phantom tho.
Lead Guitar = 1 mic on the cab ( non phantom )
Keyboard = DI
Vox
1 lead ( I would like phantom)
3 backups ( non phantom )
This would just about cover it for what we wanna do. The problem is the location we would be recording in. I cannot track them in my studio because of size and I do not have a sound room to handle the drum isolations. So we figured, why not track it where they practice which is large enough. Then the question came to me as to what they would need to seperately track this stuff. Dont get me wrong, I know what they could use, but I dont see a need to purchase mixers, a/d I/O devices, computer,HD recorders, tape etc when the place is no where near setup for real mixing or monitoring.
So one of them asked me about one of those little all in one thingy. I guess like the one Roland used to make a VS or something. I could work with one of those, but do they make one that would give me at least 16 inputs with maybe 1 or 2 of those inputs being XLR with phantom.
Or if any of you have any other suggestions please drop them on me. Budget is about $2,500 for mixing and tracking. I will help them with the other stuff. Oh and I need inserts for outboard gear as well. At least 4 for comp, mono micpre, etc.
Thanks
Malcolm
