Any good suggestions for an online reference mix for learning/comparison in the general rock/jazz vocal ballad category? Thanks.

I would suggest you google mixing templates specific to the genre or go straight to
David Gibson "The Art of Mixing".
The author details and demonstrates how music fills up a perceived 3 dimensional space with placement, volume and eq and how FX add or subtract from these components. He then breaks down specific genres and presents a visual cheat sheet or guide as what you may want to listen for and emulate when mixing yourself.
Well worth the purchase, here is an ebook link to a legal site.
Also vids on youtube I believe.
