i know djs are the backbone of the movement, but i'm a drummer/bassist/guitarist trying to put together a hip-hop band. i love the roots, j swift, jay dee, etc., and i never miss gin kru when they come to town.

what else should i hear in the way of organic hip-hop?

thanks...

...

hmm also from philly, check out Bahamadia (she is down with the roots) and the Mountain brothers (alot of the mountain brothers stuff is live instruments).
other then that check out some DJ Krush albums (organic in my mind is more trip-hop so i will list some trip-hop cats)
DJ shadow is also very good. Esthero from cananda is a great duo (one main femal vocalist and her producer/dj)

thats a start ill think of more later

peace

awesome advice. anybody else?

surely you guys know of somebody who rhymes in front of a live band and pulls it off.

organic? erykah badu, digable planets, de la soul, a tribe called quest's Low End Theory, Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Common's One Day It'll All make sense, Rick Braun, check out the Hieroglyphics & Del.

there's also a lot of live turntablism cats outs there, who spin some new soul/neo hip hop combinations.

all the above plus the root's first album. no not "Do you want more ?!?!!" but Organix the original black Hip Hop Album
it is truly RAW
check it out

You wanted live band shit right?? Cause a few mentioned I am almost positive where not live bands...

But Heiruspecs or something like that is a live hiphop band I believe...Check them out.

i just wanna get 3-4 other multi-instrumentalists together to make fresh hip hop from scratch. DJs and MCs are deathly important, but i know more trumpeters and bassists (i'm down the street from one of the best music schools in the states).

so, if you know of anyone who spits rhyme in front of a live drummer, and does it well, that's the kind of inspiration i was looking for.

thanks.
