what the hell, i just got my new powermac dual g5 a while ago, everythings running smooth, all of a sudden im working on a project today and we notice that the vocals dont groove with the song...and its been getting worse and worse, now the vocals recorded are maybe 30-60 MS off of the original "performed" position, i tried different buffer settings 128, up to 512, no change, atleast that i could tell, it steadily gets worse with the larger of projects. songs that only have a few tracks arent as bad, but this problem is on every session. i only have 512MBs of ram, i have a dual 2GHZ processor, could it be a ram issue? im using logic pro 7, what should i do? this is really putting a halt to everythign blah! to check to make sure the vocalist wasnt just having a bad day, i myself went into the vocal room, and clapped along to a metronome, my claps were a good ways behind each metronome ping

that's not much RAM, but I doubt it's a memory issue. what kind of interface do you have running into your mac.. I don't know much about them but it sounds like a sound interface issue more than anything..

running a motu 828MKii firewire into the mac,

never have had any problems untill recently. i used to work with an old 800MHZ g4 with a gig of ram, and that NEVER had problems/

i've always been troubled with latency (p4 3.2 ghz, 512 RAM[my weakpoint] windows xp he)

im running pro tools le with an mbox and i cant seem to fix the latency problem either. i'll be interested to see what fixes yours (im upgrading to a gig of ram soon, but everyone doubts thats the problem)

Sounds like some kind of bus congestion. Maybe the system/disk bus or a firewire thing or both. Does the latency increase by adding more playback tracks? If so, a quick solution might be to do a scratch mix and use that as the guide for tracking, instead of pushing all the tracks through playback at once while recording. Also check to make sure that some automated system feature isn't clogging things up. Try running the system as bare as possible, with no unneccesary connections or software running.

i'm interested that things worked ok for you before, and now they don't.

if they worked ok once, then i can't see it being an issue with hardware.

what it does sound like, and what I would be looking for first, is unwanted applications churning around in the background.

i don't know whether you use the music PC also for the internet, but if so, it is possible that you may have picked up some spyware or similar.

what i would look for next is desirable applications running in the background (such as virus checkers). you may need to disable these while you record.

well in logic...there's several things that will affect latency. try dropping down to 64 for a buffer size (that's where i have to run mine). also see if the "use large disk buffer" is checked or not...you might want to try it both ways. you can also check the portion that asks if you want a small, medium, or large size for disk processing. again, try all three and see what works. i've had TONS of trouble with motu systems on my mac. i had the 241/0, 896, 192hd, and none of them worked right, ever...not matter how many of them i swapped out. lots of syncing issues. also, make sure you have the most updated drivers and system updates. as an absolutely last resort...i've had great success with the presonus firepod. i also used a digi002r with a digimax lt lightpiped in that worked. if you don't have tiger, i'd highly suggest picking it up. a lot of enhancments in the audio department. good luck.
