Rokket

Trailing Behind Again
I finished my collab with MadAudio. His lead guitar put the icing on the cake. Here is a preliminary mix. Please listen and let me know what needs tweeking. I want to put this one to bed so that I can finally call my year old project finished and move on to bigger and better things:

The song is, of course "Such A Shame"

Thanks!

Rokket,
The music sounds pretty good, the vocals are a little spotty pitch wise, the backgroung vocals sound like a harmonizer on a fixed preset,.. a little too dense.

Believe me , I am not saying I can sing, but I would say that the vocals are the soft point in your production.

Thanks. I'll work on it!

I agree with vocals being a bit pitchy, and a bit too overdubbed. I'd prefer a SINGLE vocal line that sounds organic and real than something this glossy.

Other than that things seem to be progressing well.

Nice song Rokket, and I liked the guitars (there's a wierd panning thing about 1:36, just for a heartbeat, sounds like an editing oversight, something lurking far right). Sorry, but I do agree that the vocals don't do the rest of it justice.

OK, so we are all in agreement that I can't sing! LOL! I am going to fix the problems with the vocal. I think then the backing vocals were probably too loud, too thick and too over produced. I can fix that.

The pitchiness is in the main vocal, right?

I can retrack that. Keep em coming!

I hate to be all picky, but the lead sounds strange to me where you've placed it. I think it starts a beat or two earlier than the way I heard it in my head. But hey, it's your song and if you like it then that's all that counts.

I think the rhythm guitars could come up a bit in the mix. Everything else is well balanced.

I'd rather have the vocal sound less processed and glossy... even if it is "warts and all."

My wife said the vocals remind her of the mutant crossbreed of Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Quote: "he's a one man Travelling Willburys."

I think a single strong vocal take would fit this song. Where the trouble comes in is the harmony parts and overdubs.

Just let it rip and comp a vocal.

And maybe a few overdubs here and there, but not the wall of vocals Def Leppard thing.

I'll back it up a beat... I liked how it came in, but hey, it's your solo and your feel, and I don't want to throw that. I will back it up.

I lowered the volumes on all the vocals and got rid of the 3rd set ( I had one right, one left, one centered and it was too much). I think my problem is that I had them too loud and pronounced. I am going to tweak it and then put up the remix and see what happens.

Thanks guys!

No, no, the other way! Listen to the mp3 clip I sent you. That's where I think it should start. And thanks.

That's what I meant... It should come in about a beat later than I had it right? I am listening to your mp3 and trying to get it right....

Is the wah effect too much or should I leave it on there?

I got the solo lined up, and gave it a soft fade at the end, and I am liking the auto-wah. If it doesn't sit right with you, let me know and it's gone.

I have posted a new version of the mix.

Let me know if I am getting there!

Is that a good or a bad thing?

Hey, just listened to the latest mix. It's sounding really full and everything has good presence. The guitar leads still comes in too early, though.

Yeah, I was gonna say there's a little George Harrison in there...

I will work on it. Vegas is touchy when it comes to sliding the track along the timeline, and it either goes too far to the right or in the spot it's in. I thought it was following the chord changes well, but I will try to get it closer to where your mp3 is at.

You never mentioned if you liked the effects?

Ummm... do you remember who was in that band? Definately good man. :)
I had to ask, since you were in critique mode. It really does my self esteem good to be compared to George Harrison and Tom Petty, let alone Roy Orbison.
Tell your wife thank you for me,

and thank all of you for the listen.

That in mind, I guess all that is left is to fix the solo coming in!

Thanks again, MadAudio for you help!

Oh, you're using Vegas? You must have one of the 'snap-to' features enabled. Just hit F8 to disable it, and you can put that clip wherever you like. Then hit F8 again to reenable the 'snap-to' function.

Yeah, keep the effect, it sounds good!
