Styrofoam vs. 703

Don't ask me how, but I've been collecting a big pile of styrofoam lately. This is in 1 and 1.5 inch thick squares.

So, how does styrofoam rate against 703 compressed fiberglass for sound absorption?

I know, I know: Do a search.... I tried but couldn't find a comparison.

I picked the Styrofoam to eat, because the compressed fiberglass is actually good for something in the studio, where as the Styrofoam is not.

The Styro has absolutely no acoustic absorptive properties nor will it block any sound due to the fact is has NO mass.

I know....I built a vocal booth with it before I investigated it.
It works for coolers ..... that is about it.

Really. [acting very surprised] Dang! I also have found out that you can't even recycle the G.D. stuff! I'll cut it up and use in my spapghetti for awhile then.

Yeah,
I was a dork.
I should have researched it before building, but I listened to my Dad, a building contractor for 30 years, and we figured if it was good for temperature it was good for sound.
I put 3/4 inch both sides of the walls then plywood, then sheetrock. I ended up putting a second layer of 5/8th sheetrock and finally got enough isolation.

Then I turned my attention to absorbing in the booth, and built panels using regular wall insulation..... Should have researched THAT as well..... It worked for vocals I guess.

I am not sure, but the foam may be of a little benefit if you build some platforms (like for drums or amps) and use them for cushions under the bottom to decouple it from the floor. It will probably mash all to heck eventually.

I guess work up a load of sauce and start chewing....

The price is negotiable but going up. I'm heading for unemployment!

You can always break the styro up into little pieces, mix it with gas and sell napalm :=)

The only thing styrofoam might be usefull for is as a physical isolator. In other words if you were doing a raised floor you might try uing a closely spaced array of the styrofoam cubes as the physical support for a layer of plywood subfloor.
