Guitar---Zoom 505MKII Multi-FX----USB Audio Interface----Computer

Is this an ok set-up or will I need anything else to get the best out of it.

A microphone on the speaker of an amp would probably sound better than the zoom, but your setup will most definitely work. Whether to record an amp or go direct is largely a matter of preference. Those zoom boxes have an "amp simulator" function, but I don't think it's all that good of a substitute for the real thing. Best way to know is to try it out and see if you are happy with the results. Good luck.

I used to have one of those 505s...

and had some real fun with those sounds. It's a great start for recording. But after the first 10 songs, you realize using the same guitar sounds can really cramp your style.

I've still got one and I don't use it because it's noisy as hell. I still mess with it for practicing, but never to record anymore. Too much hiss and buzz (probably more from the cheap pickups in my guitar, but I don't get it when I use my amp ).

Yeah it is pretty noisy. Turning the gain/vol. down helps though.

BTW, just a little question to save me opening another thread

Could I connect my guitar amps CD player output to the phono speaker input of my audio interface and use the amp as a monitor instead of headphones?

I don't think it will sound right. Is your amp a stereo amp, with two speakers? Maybe. But even if it's a stereo amp with two speakers driven by separate pre amps, they are probably too close together to do you any good as a monitor, and not configured to act as a monitor as their main function is to provide you sound for your guitar.
But I could be wrong. Try it. Just be careful when you connect it that you don't blow the amp.
