i just got a ibanez rg7421 7-string for christmas and i was looking at the pickups and noticed that they had some tape looking stuff on them (this is where i got stupid ) so i assumed it was some sort of packing thing and started to take it off but as i started i kind of got to thinking that maybe it wasnt and now i dont know what to do but i came here to find out if it was or wasnt a packing ting and if it isnt where i can pick some up to fix what i did
 
My Gibson SG has some kind of black tape kinda stuff around the edges of the P/U also, and it disappears beneath the pickguard. I suspect it's some kind of dust guard or just to cover up the space between the P/U and the cutout on the pickguard.

I'd leave it alone if it's on the side. Its more than likely there for a reason.
If it was on the top, yeah, I'd say take it off.
 
Sounds like it may be the tape that protects the pickup wires. You probably haven't done any damage, but if ti is wrapped around the coils of the pickups, you should replace it.
