dude, you have seriously got to stop multiple posting.

Floor Tom Mic

MXL 990 works with low gain
Can't beat a good ole SM58 or SM57!

I think my 990 would be to much....but i can try? that and would an sm57 really be that good for the floor tom?

i said cheap.....lol i already know the atm25 was my first choice but even that mic is still a little much...is however is the atm25 a good rock bass drum mic?

atm 25 is good anywhere, even on vox, but especially on kick and floor toms and bass cabs

The Beta 52 has a nice punchy, clicky sound that works pretty nice for metal tracks. It sounds like it has already been EQ'd for a metal or rock track.

Mics

I'd look for a mic with a flat frequency response down to @30Hz... Any decently built mic will do.

I've gotten decent results out of my SM57s, but it always lacks a little 'oomph' without good overhead mics.

To additionally make up for the 57, I always turn my bass drum mic towards the lo tom whilst still inside the bass drum. That way when I EQ the kick up @75hz for that bump, just a little bit of Lo Tom comes through too.

do you have overheads? if you do, its not absolutley necessary to have individual mics for your toms. get a nice 4- mic setup and you should be good: kick, snare, and two overheads. you can do really good with about $450 bucks.

i have the CAD, it works for my kik, before that i was using a b5 on omni, not bad, and before that i was using ecm8000 also ok, keeping it cheap, but it's not my usual instrument to be recording

I use an MD421...I heard some people like the SP B1 or B3 on toms...

i have one of those cad kbm412. its certainly not bad on floor tom as long as its turned right. its a bit too scooped for my taste on anything else, including bass amps.

I love the MD 421 on toms, and it works well on bass too. normally I'll run the bass DI on one track and blend it with the signal from the 421 on another track. Slamming that signal HOT onto analog tape give a natural tape compression that crunches the bass up and sounds great for rock and metal. I know not many people use analog tape anymore, but the do make plug ins to emulate tape compression.

As far as kick goes, it's hard to beat the D112. Great low end response, and it doesn't distort with the high SPL.

I agree. Often, about the only really good use for these low dollar LD's is on toms! They pick up low end pretty well, and the top end craps out about like you would want for a drum!

As a low dollar solution, it is hard to beat!

Otherwise, the KING of tom mics is the 421! A great alternate for floor tom in the RE-20/RE-27 n/d. But all three are fairly expensive!

On a 8" 10" and even a 12" tom, a SM 57 sounds VERY good! Anything bigger, you really need a mic with better low frequency handling like listed above. I mean, a SM 57 will work on a floor tom too with careful placement, but you will be doing some eq and possibly compression to get the low end to ring out properly.

AT pro 25 is nice on floor toms. and cheap. Not a good all around mic like the ATM25, but does amazinly well on floor toms. I like a 57 better for rack toms, and it's not so hot on kick (at least compared to the ATM25! - amazing on kicks there) I can't vouch for it on bass - never tried it. I usually don't mic bass cabs.

$60 at 8th street.
the older model, they might run out eventually at this price, grab one now.
