Hey Guys,

I was wondering how my "homestudio" would sound if i'd record a full band ( no vocals this time) and i would mix it to my ears.
Th drums are recorded in the attic during a test session with my brother.
I used the drums as a base to build around, the guitars are recorded via DI with a Boss SD-1 pedal in between, Bass guitar also via DI.
De rest of the effects are done with keyboard (organ).

I am curious what you guys think about the mix and composition, comments and tips are welcome!:)

Tnx,

John

Nice drumming! Guitar comes through nice and clear. Well played and tight with the the drums. Bass lost somewhat in the mix.
Sudden end caught me by suprise! The guitarpart suggests a vocal melody fairly strongly. It could do with a different section, maybe change to the relative minor. The overall sound is good. did you use a limiter/compressor over the mix?:)

Hey airsculptor,
Tnx for your comments! I'll give the drummer ( my brother) your compliment!:)
Yeah bass is still a dificult task for me to fit in the mix, I do not want it to sound too boomy but on the other hand not so thin.
I'm still working on the vocal part now, but first I'll try to finish the song first.
In this mixdown I didn't use a multiband limiter, I found that it reduces the dynamics dramatically, even on mild settings. ( or maybe it is just me :P)

Hi JohnDude,

yeh I know that problem with the bass. mixwise what I try and go for is scooping out some space from the other instruments. The other thing is too experiment with different instruments, bases are all different and sometimes you find the cheapest, nastiest , most beat up, actually sounds better on the recording.

Limiters eh!

I think it could be self fuflling thing in some respects. You get used to a certain amount of limiting, and it becomes the 'norm' and you like it. You hear much more or less, and I think the response is mostly 'its different from what I'm used too'. Havin said that, I do think, good multi band limiting can bring out detail that is otherwise lost

regards

sculpt:)

I do like the guitar tones. Sounds great. The drumming is great. Agree the bass is way too far in the background. Nice beginning to a song though.
