I want to set up a home studio and I'm wondering if the following setup would work?

Apple G4 (w/digital performer) <---> Delta 1010 <--- 8 ch mic pre <-- mic's/instruments

Eventually I would get a Mackie control or other control surface but I wouldn't be able to afford it for a while. I have the speakers I would use as moniters. The Logitech z-680's, I would use the s/pdif out on the delta into the spdif/coaxial in on the z-680's.

I am 99.999% certain that S/PDIF will not carry 8 individual tracks. It most likely will sum them into one.

Those speakers are for surround sound, gaming type stuff right? They won't work very well to give you a good representation of your music. The bass is way over emphasized, and you will find other problems when you start tracking. You may want to invest in some decent monitors.

I'm actually not looking for 6 full channels I only expect two. Won't the s/dif out combine them into 2 channels? And what would you suggest for powered moniters for less than $300 if the z-680's wont work?

Are these any good? And any problems with the setup besides the speakers?

I haven't heard of those speakers, but as long as you are getting as close to flat response, you will be ok. That's the only problem with your current ones. The rest of your signal chain should work for you. If you can't get good monitors, a way to check your mix is to burn it to CD and listen to it on as many different sources as possible; i.e. your home stereo, a small boom box, your car, and note what doesn't sound right so that you can go back and fix it. This is a good idea even if you have good monitors. Good luck!

I know someone that has KRK moniters and they sound pretty nice. They're also not too expensive. I can assign TRS outputs 1 and 2 on the 1010 to be the left and right channels of the full sterio mix?
