I wanted to make my own portable studio so that I can record whenever im on the road. My setup consists of:

Macbook
Mbox 3 Mini w/ Pro tools LE

+the condenser mic, pop filter..etc. my question is: If all I want to do is lay my vocals over instrumental tracks in Pro tools, do I need a seperate amplifier to go along with my mbox 3 mini?

NOTE THAT *I only use that portable studio to record vocals over instrumental tracks, and mix. I send all my mixes off to get mastered professioanlly. I dont use guitars or any other instruments, just my mic and my mixer to my macbook.

Seems like you have all that you need for recording but what do you have for your monitoring chain? Also, you might want to look into a better mic pre for you vocals. The Mbox ones aren't the greatest for vocals.

what is a good mic pre for vocals? please send me a few options.

Also, I am confused by what you mean by "monitoring chain"?

On the go recording.
Have you looked into the Zoom H4n? <----- I didn't put that link in! It an audiofanzine thing. (you never know what someone else writes about when reviewing gear, though I m sure it's good).

I've never actually used the Zoom but I looked at a couple of them at the local shop - they seem like cheap plastic to me  they might work great - just seem like if I sat on it, it would be over

Do tell where?

i am mixing with headphones.

BOOO!

I also have studio monitors.

What kind?

A buddy of mine has the H4n though, he says its a great little thing for capturing quick live bits. Im not too sure it will work with emceemg's setup though as he will be overdubbing vocals to samples/loops/what not.
